Good call on the insulation. Some of the AVS zealots consider the room's acoustics like an aquarium, i.e. it either leaks or it doesn't. But, some isolation is much better than no isolation - especially with a little one in the house.

If you're going to cut half the chord of a joist away, you should just cut the whole thing and box it in to transfer the load to the nearest joists. That's the correct way to do it (structurally), and as a side benefit, it might also give you a little more head room.

There are always complications and headaches. But, it'll all be worth it when you have a cold brew and you're sitting there watching movies!

Regardless, I'm jealous. You're going to have a theater soon. It's still going to be awhile before I can get started on my basement finish. Buying the BMW and a few other expenses really delayed things a lot more than I had hoped. First world problems.

Love the photos from multiple angles; can be hard to visualize what people are saying sometimes (especially when one isn't familiar with proper terminology).

Interestingly enough the joist to be cut is right in the middle of the Dining Room so with the table presumably over it there shouldn't be much traffic and or squeaking. Never the less, I'm going to reinforce it properly to make sure there's no issues with 270lbs hanging from the ceiling.

If I were building from scratch I'd design the room a little differently to maximize accoustics but considering that I'm retrofitting an existing space I think it will all work out okay.

Drywall work has finished up and tomorrow the false screen wall is being constructed. Still pondering over the AT material; the GOM701 is the blackest material I have seen but it has a texture/textile size of burlap. Anyone have suggestions for another AT material with a deep black but finer weave?

If all you want is black, I think a lot of guys just use speaker grille material. What are you using for the actual screen material?

The screen is an existing 100" Stewart Electrimask and it's going to be mounted on the false wall frame. The speaker placement will be to the sides and below the screen (consistent with my previous set up). I also need material to cover the 6 oak columns I'm building to flank the side walls.

I looked into red TK material for the columns; the minimum order is 55 YARDS Shocked

I'm going with black because even for GOM the minimum order is 5 yards (55" x 180") and that's way more material than I'll need to cover the column grilles.
