As of Feb 28, 2016 at 10AM CST, we are now hosted on a different server in a cloud environment that brings many enhancements, redundancies, and higher performance.

There is nothing to do on your end. If you're seeing this post, you're on the new server.

The DNS change is currently propaging its way across the internet so some people will get on the new server before others.

The forum on the old server was locked before being copied over to avoid missing any posts or changes.

If anyone notices anything odd, please let me know!

The tech details:

- We set the time to live (TTL) to 60 minutes so that the new location would be picked up quickly, but some internet service providers (ISPs) may choose to ignore these broadcasts and update their lists less often.

- Before we were on a dedicated physical box with 1 GB of Ram, 1 dual core processor, and a single 7200 RPM drive. The new environment is a virtual machine running in a cloud environment where we have 2 CPUs dedicated to us along with 1 GB of Ram and enough SAN (storage area network) disk space for everything we need.

- The new cloud environment is all run within a large 8 server array running the cloud environment with a dedicated SAN. Any 3 servers can fail and the other 5 have the capacity to handle the load from the failed servers. The nimble SAN uses a RAID 6 array with redundant switches and power supplies. Power is fed from 2 different ups units in case 1 fails, the environment will stay online. Even though everything was backed up daily on the old setup, the new cloud based / SAN setup brings a large number of redundancies.

- Just like before, we're completely isolated from other websites/customers so we are not at the whim of service provider forcing updates on us in terms of software like php or MySQL. (The forum is pretty 'old school' and requires a earlier version of php. Updating it and the 80+ custom mods to be more 'future friendly' is on my todo list...)

Cheers,

Kal

Awesome, Kal. The old server was often pretty sluggish or unresponsive. This should be a great improvement.

HEADS UP: Hosting provider seems to be having some DNS issues... we seem to be toggling back and forth between the old and the new servers. This means that from time to time for some of you you may see the old notice that the forum is locked. If you do, and then come back to the "new" forum, please post here and let me know.

I've already contacted them so hopefully this'll resolve quickly.

Kal

Appears resolved now. There was an issue with the DNS server replication. I should have contacted them sooner. Sorry for the outage.

Anyone else getting their forum notification emails coming in with (a) an extra carriage return between each line, and (b) hyperlinks that are not clickable?

I'm trying to figure out if it's a server issue, sendgrid (mail sending tool) issue, or something on my client side.

Kal

Ok, I did some testing sending to hotmail and gmail as well and the URLs in the email are clickable, so that issue seems to be a client side issue. For whatever reason my Outlook 2013 doesn't want the URLs to be clickable (kind of annoying).

I've also confirmed that all 3 recipients (Outlook 2013, hotmail, and gmail) are receiving double spaced emails. For whatever reason there's an extra carriage return between every line that wasn't there before. Less of an issue than not being able to click URLs but kind of annoying as you have to scroll more. It may have something to do with the fact that all outgoing mail is now encrypted (TLS) which is a good thing, so I'm not going to get rid of that. Gmail just a couple of weeks ago has started showing little red unlocked padlocks beside any email that isn't encypted. It won't be long before mail providers stop accepting emails that aren't encrypted so I knew I had to do something.

This whole matter's made more confusing as our outgoing mail gets sent to SendGrid (a third party SMTP provider) which then sends out. We don't send direct as that's a nightmare of managing black lists/etc. I use sendgrid.net for forum notifications and Amazon SES for newsletters and my personal emails. (Both are pay services).

I'll have to play around a bit and see what's up. It may have to do with the message encoding as well (iso-8859-1 vs utf-8). No idea. This is not my usual area of expertise. More testing is required. Groan.

Any SMTP / mail relay experts here?

Kal

In both cases sendgrid.net (SMTP mail service) is forwarding the mail for us.

Other than the TLS encryption, on the old server there seemed to be some sort extra conversion going on. This line from the old server seems telling?:

X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by lded1.atcihosting.com id u1QNGNrY006636

There's nothing like this on the 'new' server emails.

phpbb2 is the forum software.

Ok, I bypassed using sendgrid.net's SMTP mail sending service and the double line issue (and non-linking in Outlook) has gone away. Email's going out are still TLS encrypted so that's good - it'll hopefully make sure that people are getting forum notifications. The industry's really moving to using TLS. Anyone using GMAIL will notice the little padlock that recently appeared in all your emails if the email wasn't encrypted in transit.

As well, we're on a new IP now with the new server so I plan to keep mail being sent out of this IP very "clean". No more automated forwards to external email accounts - that got us into trouble in the past. Spammers would send emails to any of the emails listed on this site (ex: lumagen@curtpalme.com) which we'd automatically forward to external mail servers who then blacklisted us after so many years/months of doing this. It made us look like the spammers even though we were only forwarding.

No using Sendgrid.net to send out forum notifications will also save me about $1/month. Woohoo! Not sure what I'll do with all this new found wealth.

EDIT: Actually, I won't save anything, unless I cancel/close the account. Don't want to do that just yet. For now I'll just start thinking about how to spend that windfall if I cancel a few months down the road... Wink

Anyone else finding the forum faster? I don't really notice a difference myself (it's always been fast for me).

It can't be faster connectivity (bigger pipe) to some locations as both the old and new server locations have similar ping times when I use a service to ping from around the world (I used this tool to check: https://asm.ca.com/en/ping.php Old server IP: 206.225.20.165 New server IP: 209.135.132.157)
