Link Posted: Wed Feb 10, 2016 4:16 pm Post subject: What coax cable for RGBHV via BNC? |
|
|
I'm going to need a bunch of BNC cables for RGBHV to my three ceiling mounted projectors soon. Since we're not talking just a few metres, pre-made stuff is out. I don't want to spend a small fortune on gold-plated connectors and whatnot (the PJs have regular chrome connectors anyways), nor very expensive cables. I wanted to use colour coded coax, but anything other than black or white seems to be priced double, so I gave up on that. What spec BNC cable should I really be looking at? Longest cable run will be about 10 metres, so I am thinking that regular, RG-58/U coax (same stuff used for 10base2, 50ohm impedance) would do? Would I be sacrificing any image quality by using this 'run-of-the-mill' cable?

I use RG59/U but only at low resolutions/scan rates. At higher rates and longer lengths the picture got blurry.
I'd use RG6 Quad shield. You can ususally find it on the roll for $20CDN/ €12.50 for 100feet for the Philips/GE made in china stuff.
For a better quality you might look at Beldin's made in the USA stuff. They have a mini Belden 1522A cable for RGBHV use.
Have a look at Bluejeanscable.com.
http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/rgbhv/index.htm
They do custom ordered cables too.

Thanks for the tip! I wonder though... I looked at local offerings, RG59 is -much- more expensive then RG6... yet it is worse in quality? How does that even compute ???

Ahh yes, I forgot to add. Make sure you are getting RG6 Quad Shield copper wire. Some of the RG6 is steel wire with copper plating. That stuff is junk.
That may be the difference you are seeing in price. If the RG59 could be all copper and the RG6 could be steel/copper plated.
Read the label on the rolls.

Should the shielding be copper as well? Looking at copper core with tin shielding, still a lot cheaper... it's odd...

Okay so I can either find copper coated steel core with quad shielding, or copper conductor with tri-shielding... about the same price...

Note: don't use RG58 50ohm cable, video requires 75 ohm cable
I know on the RG59 I have; if it's single shield - 80% it will be just braided copper shield with spacing inbetween the strands, if it's double shielded, 98% shield, it will have copper with a tighter shield and a foil overshield.
Then there are the economy cables. Copper center with stranded aluminum or steel and a foil over shield and the previously mentioned steel core/copper plated with a woven steel/foil shielding
I liken it to buying tyres:
They are all round, black and hold air and your car rolls down the road on them but there is a big difference between a $50 tire and a $300 tire. Of course you need to match them to the car you are driving. A Ferari won't do very well on $50 tyres/ Will a economy car benefit much by having Z speed rated $300 tyres on each corner?
In the case of cables you need to determine a couple of things:
The projector you are running - low end, mid end , high end .
Your source(s):
Standard PAL/NTSC video
DVD: PAL 704x576; NTSC 720x480
PC low res ( eg 1024x768 ) or high res (eg 1600x1200);
Bluray :1920x1080.
I have cables that work OK at 1024x768 but are blury at high resolutions. Longer cables runs need better cables for the same resolution to avoid "ringing" or "blurryness" in the picture.
So you need to determin the quality of your projectors. Are they presentation units at 1024x768/1280x800 or are you running 1080p at 1920x1080?
Are these to be sourced with PC, DVD or Bluray?
You need longer runs and have to consider picture quality over the longer runs too.
So, I would say weigh the cost of the top quality cables versus the sources you will use and the type of projectors you have and the lengths you need to have.
The RG59 all coopper may be fine or it may be blurry at longer lengths. The steel/CC cables might be OK but may look terrible on a long run. Check the shielding as well. single/double/quad, 80%, 90%, 98% it all makes a differnce to cost.
You have one more thing you need to consider, future proofing. If you intend to change out the projectors in the futre will the current cables handle the upgrade or will you have to re-cable all over again?

In this case go for the copper all the way.
Also check out the eBay stuff Nash posted. Looks good.

So would the tri-shielded copper core be the choice if only the above two are available?
Nash, that stuff looks good, but shipping completely kills it... I'm in the EU
My shortest run would be about 6 metres (20 feet or so), the longest about 10 metres (about 36 feet or so?). The centre one would be inbetween the two... The sides are Nec PG9 plus, and the centre one a BG 808s. It's the Barco that really needs the better cabling, as that will be run at 1080p, the two NECs probably only 1080i (p only if I can tweak them untl I am satisfied) and they have lower bandwidth anyways.
Think I will go for RG6 tri-shielded copper core all around... It's not horribly expensive, and all-black will work...
RG11 would be superior though right? I'm just not sure how rigid that really is... I don't need to take very sharp turns with it, just to feed the NECs from the front...
Edit: Ahh right almost forgot, I'm grabbing a Kramer video switcher, and the cables will run from the switcher to the PJs. The switcher will be fed with shorter runs from whatever appliance I want attached really...

RG11 would be better but you'll need bigger terminals, bigger crimping tool and the diameter of the cables is big also. Not sure you would easily be able to get them twisted onto the BNC connectors at the projector.
RG11 tends to be used for long distances over 45 metres or on a main drop at the cable head end. Also as you say it's not the nicest thing to work with as it doesn't bend too well.

Depending on how long they need to be, I should have some good quality surplus 5 BNC to BNC cables here that I'm dying to get rid of. I also have about 200' of mini coax stuff with crimp connectors that I can cut to length. Really good stuff I got locally. I've run up to 100' with no significant loss.

Thanks for the tips guys and thanks for the offer Curt, I'm going to pick up a roll of RG6 copper that I managed to get for about $30 locally and see how that goes. It should be fine as my runs aren't that long really.
