I'm looking at changing from 5.1 to 7.1 surround sound. My amp has the outputs but I was wondering about the side surround speakers. I'll keep the rear surrounds but has anyone had any luck cutting speakers into 2x2 tiles? I have a drop ceiling in the basement and I think that would look the best.

Sure, why not? That's 50% of the speakers I install commercially! Make sure you get a TBAr mounting kit that spans the tile as a backing. Putting a 5lb+ speaker into a T Bar grid with only the plastic flip out clips has the sure makings of a headache.. or worse..

What Curt said. It's done all the time commercially. Look around next time you're at a store or facility with a drop ceiling, and you'll see speakers all over.
We installed my dad's surrounds in his drop ceiling years ago. We didn't use any backer or mounting kit, so even though the speakers are fairly lightweight, and the ceiling tiles pretty sturdy, they've developed juuuust a bit of sag. I'd definitely use a mounting kit like curt suggested, or at least cut a piece of luan or 1/4-inch plywood to put behind. Home Depot sells 2-foot x 4-foot "hobby" pieces of drywall and sheet lumber so you don't have to buy a whole sheet.
