Well, *crap*. My PS3 has died AGAIN with the infamous YLOD. This is the FOURTH time it's died in 3 years. Given how little I actually use the damn thing, that means it's getting very little life out of each YLOD fix. I doubt it got more than 100 hours since the last fix. The fix was pretty cheap -- after the first time, the shop has only been charging me half to re-fix it, so $35 -- but last time they told me it was time to retire it if it died again.
So it's time for a new BD player. I really like the ability to play ripped video files. And given how little I use it, and given that my Marquee does only a passable job of 720p, I really don't need the latest-greatest uber-player. Any suggestions for a decent relatively-inexpensive player that also plays video files?

PS4, duuhh
actually I don't know, but the kids just got one for xmas from their mother along with a 43" LED TV. After 10 days of mortal combat gunfire filling our living room now wants to know " Why can't we move the game downstairs".
Because our HOME THEATER is not a f*cking gameroom.

Aww, Daaaaaaaddd.....
I let my boys play CoD &etc several times in the theater. Didn't hurt anything and they loved it. But they weren't living with me any more so it was just an occasional thing. Let your boys start playing in the theater and they'll never come out!!

I still really like my HT and we still use it as a family quite often. The thought of going down , plopping in a Blue ray, and seeing some task bar burned into the tubes, showing how much ammunition or life force I have left, is not really something I can stomach.
Really the only option would be to get rid of of my fixed screen, which is one of the best fixed screens made, and replace with a $200. roll-up. Then mount the TV behind the screen. Can't see doing that either.
I'm digging my heels in, she does whatever she wants rest of the house, but I built that F-in HT with my bare hands and it's not a game room.

Why don't you get one of those old, tall library carts on wheels, a cheap digital PJ, hook up whatever audio works (the boys won't care) and let the boys have fun. When it's done, roll the sucker into the laundry room.

I have a Cambridge audio 752.
I hate it, it feels like junk, but to be fair, it's picture is stunning and it does sound pretty good, and it plays everything.

I wouldn't worry about uneven wear too much. We used to game on our the CRT projector all the time and if you consider that it's rare that people play more than 50-100 hours on any given game over the lifetime they own the game, it's not going to do much harm at all.
Or just get a digital.

I never got over my lightning induced HDMI death on my original 60GB PS3 shortly after its first year in my home. Its been a paper weight ever since. Wasn't willing to pay Sony's $150 to fix it. I have a PS3 slim, too, which has never been on a network and remains on whatever software it came with during the initial months of Slim release.
Mind you I have never played a single game on these Sony consoles. Xbox is a different story.
