Hi guys
I am in the process of buying a budget digital projector, to be used from now and until we
have moved. Maybe a year or so. I have been looking into the Benq W1070, but I need a
longer throw distance(just below 6 meters away from the wall, picture should not exceed
3.5m in width)
So, I have all but settled on Optoma HD25...but I cannot fnd it anywhere in my neck of
the woods. I look at reviews/specs of other Optomas, but it is a jungle with color wheel
speeds etc. Then I start doubting if I should go LCD instead.
I would love some advice. I have never seen DLP in person, last time I saw LCD was
maybe 10-13 years ago. I don't need 1080p, 720p will be fine. The price should be
in the Optoma HD25-area and the throw distance should be long.
Any suggestions?

Since you're buying low end, I'd strongly recommend you look at the projector in person critically before buying. If you see DLP rainbows, then you need to go LCD. To me, all digitals are built to be throwaway, so read if any model has significant failures. Can't steer you in any direction otherwise.

At this price range, you could try the Optoma and if you don't like it sell it for minimal loss.
Do you have to have new? I have bought two used digital pjs in the last six months that are really good for the price.

Heck, I would check with Jeremy112 and see what he has available. I don't use them everyday, but I've picked up a couple of projectors from him that I use for Halloween.

If you're willing to go used, a Panasonic PT-DW5100 would be a good option, it has a decent contrast ratio, good brightness, highly reliable, and no rainbow affect from the colorwheel. Its 1280x768 resolution.
If you are keeping the screen width no bigger than 3.5m (diagonal, you didn't specify) than this projector would have to be placed at just over 6m distance from the screen. I don't know if that's acceptable, but it comes pretty close to what you are asking for. If you are doing 3.5m wide (not diagonal) then it wouldn't work with the standard lens it comes with.
The benefit of this projector is it has an interchangeable lens (albeit a bit on the pricey side, but nothing unusual for any lens). You can choose from a wide variety of lenses to suit the throw distance and screen size you need specifically for your room. So you could keep it for use with your new location when you move. Also this projector generally sells for less than $800 used, fully working, with a lens and 2 lamps (you can use 2 at the same time or each separately)
The only thing I would add to it is its considered a "large venue" projector since its capable of a very large screen and has professional features (such as many CRT projectors do) built into it. But for the price, I would buy a used one of these over a crappy optoma any day.
The optoma is guaranteed to fail within 5 years of being manufactured if it has had more than one lamp used in it, I've had enough come in that I can safely say that, they just aren't built to last. That and the image quality was somewhat disappointing compared to the specifications for many of their HD projectors.
The Panasonic is a very high quality projector comparatively and at the same price point as the Optoma.
There are of course several other projectors out there in the same price range you are seeking that would also work, I don't know their throw distances off hand and what not, but the Panasonics I have worked pretty heavily with so I'm fairly familiar with their performance capabilities. That along with you needing a specific throw distance makes this an ideal projector in my opinion.
Just thought I'd add my 2 cents.
