Rotel RSX1560 starts up and all video on screen menu, video switching and adjustments work.
NO SOUND through any input, including FM radio and direct, to any speaker set. I can hear a very faint click through speakers when I change inputs, maybe the amp section is working? Who knows.
Tried a factory reset and it powered off but did not turn back on like the manual said it would. Turn it on manually again and all setting were reset like they should.

Should I box it and send it to Rotel for repair? That sounds spendy.
Let some local repair shop have at it and hope they have a clue?
Just let it go and save up for something new?
Opinions welcome.
Thanks

That's a pretty nice piece to just let it go. PM Mac and see if he'd be willing to take a crack at it. Maybe he can even give you a ballpark estimate. He does component-level repairs, and he as access to all necessary schematics and service manuals. He's about the only person I know that's interested in doing work like that.

PM macgyver655

Cheers,

I contacted Rotel

Quote:
Thank you for contacting the Rotel Technical Support Department.

I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with your Rotel Receiver.

I have generated a Repair Invoice for your RSX-1560.

In order to provide the fastest service possible, we require pre-approval for a Service Charge of $200.00 or less excluding return shipping along with a Credit Card Number and the Expiration Date.

We accept Visa, MasterCard, and American Express.

Please reference Repair Invoice Number XXXXX or Web ID Number XXXXXX on your reply.

If you would prefer a phone call, please supply a contact number and a time that is most convenient for you.

I will give you a call at the supplied contact number at the designated time.

Once the information is received, I will complete the Repair Invoice and send you the Repair Invoice Confirmation to the supplied e-mail address.

The Repair Invoice Confirmation will include a shipping label (not pre-paid) with our Shipping Address, your Return Address, and the Repair Invoice Number.

This will insure that your Receiver is delivered to Equity International and the Repair Invoice Number will direct it to the Rotel Service Department.

If the Service Charge is $200.00 or less, your Credit Card will be billed and you will be informed by e-mail that your Receiver has been repaired and processed for return shipping.

If the Service Charge exceeds $200.00, an estimate will be sent to the supplied e-mail address at which point you can "Approve" or "Decline" the estimate. If the estimate is approved we will complete the repair, charge your account and process your Receiver for return shipping.

Please be advised the Return Shipping charge will not be included with the Service Charge however you will be informed of the Return Shipping charge when you receive the Repair Invoice Confirmation.

If the estimate is "Declined" there would be a $75.00 service charge plus return shipping to have your Receiver returned unrepaired or I can dispose of the component at no charge.

Please be advised that when the repair has been completed your Receiver will be returned via UPS Ground.

An Adult Signature will be required before the delivery can be released.

If you prefer to have your Receiver returned to an alternate Return Shipping Address where someone will be available to sign for the package and accept the delivery please supply the alternate Return Shipping Address as "C/O" (i.e. C/O 125 Main Street).

I do apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Best Regards:

OK, so there's no way in hell a repair like that will be under $200. I'd guess the repair will be close to what it's worth - say $800 or $900. Or, the repair will be $650 and it's only worth $800 or $900. Worse, when you do get the estimate for $650, if you decline, then you're out the $75 plus the shipping both ways, so what, $150 or more?

I'd wait and see what Mac says before you do anything.

Yeah, it would basically end up being a $75 fee plus shipping for them to dispose of it.
I wouldn't want to pay more than a few hundred to have it fixed and I can sure imagine it costing much more.

If you decide to dispose of it I'd be interested in it for the cost of shipping. I'm not offering to repair it because I've never worked on a Rotel, but what I have owned from rotel seemed nice.

I'd just hate to see it get tossed is all. So keep me in mind if ya wanna ditch it Very Happy

Ya know, I would have no problem with that, but its already been sold Sad I do have another one, but its not behaving like it should so obviously you wouldn't want that Razz

I do have a Yamaha RX-V373 though, but its not as "high end" as the Onkyo.

All I can say is DAMMIT! Laughing

Mac isn't returning emails. He bailed when the mod thing was going on, and I haven't heard from him since.

I have a Yamaha RX-V393 but the surround mode makes odd chirping noises. The front speakers sound great in stereo mode.

I have had lousy luck with anything other than 2 channel audio lately. I've even double checked my wiring and traded out surround speakers to eliminate the possibility of some sort of trouble there.

I'm running a Denon AVR1601 now and all the channels work, but it has some other issue where it's somewhat light in the bass response.

Mac did get back with me and graciously offered to take a look at the Rotel.

Wow, This site always amazes me with how kind and totally cool everybody is.

I would send it to him long before Rotel, but I'm still not sure it's worth shipping 40lbs of probable scrap metal across the country. I bet he would be more than fair and can fix it right too, but at what cost I don't know.

Maybe I should try to update it's firmware first Laughing I noticed it had older versions, or maybe they are corrupt or something. Grasping at straws, I know. It's all I have left to try that I can do myself.

A firmware update couldn't hurt, may as well try it, besides. Like yiou said, its already close to scrap metal Laughing

Main, audio, and video firmware updated to newest available, still no difference and no sound output. Although now it's HDMI's are 3D compliant apparently. Whoopie.
It was well behaved while updating so I guess that's a plus.

I'm boxing and shipping to Mac. Hope he's ready to have some fun with it.

Mac is my hero.

He not only fixed it, he charged me way less to repair it than the shipping cost me to send it to him!!!
He said it was an easy fix, just some problem in the power supply. Glad he didn't have to take apart and go through the stacks of circuit boards I saw sandwiched together in the chassis. Looked like a PIA to me.
Works like a champ now and he's sending it back.

I guess I got lucky on this one. I've spent more on shipping it than it cost me to buy it and fix it.

Thanks for all the help!
