Julian, if you planing to buy this I throw in my observations. If you zoom on the second picture you can see the lenses are actually plain HD-10s, not HD-10F Thumbs Down On the fifth picture all tubes reflecting grey, but this shouldn't happen with colored C-elements (the sony should came with those from factory) but it looks like someone already changed them to clear c-elements Thumbs Down IMHO too expensive and too much risk.

Thanks Gjaki, this
Quote:
all tubes reflecting grey

is exactly what i thought when i saw it the first time.
Apart from that, i didn't realize that you can open those pictures and zoom in further to full size.
I think this thread has done it's job.
I won't buy the package and stay with the 8 inchers.

Mike, I believed you from the first time on. There is no need for me to discuss things with someone
who has worked with this stuff over many years.
I've never seen a Sony pj live. And I barely understand the Marquees.
I just wanted a second opinion if maybe ... the 1292 you worked on had a failure (that made it dimmer than it ought to be).
Just because opinions are different here.

Regards, Julian

With replacement tubes being available for Marquees, and at reasonable prices, it's absolutely a no brainer. Get the right tubes. If it costs you a little bit more in raw dollar cost than Sony tubes, it'll more than pay for itself by NOT having to go through all the work necessary to try to make the Sony tubes work in a Marquee.

Personally I wouldn't touch that retrofit job with a 10 foot pole. And I could almost certainly do it, if it's possible at all.

I'd get the right tubes and never worry about it.

There's something to be said for doing things the right way rather than trying to make something fit where it doesn't belong.

I think I#d stay with the 8 inchers at least until everything is on ceiling.
I still have to build a watchable screen (torus went out bad) and get the blend to work.
Until then, it'll make no sense for me to invest a reasonable amount of money.
And apart from that, my 8 inch tubes are in a good condition and both projectors work well.
Regards, Julian

If you keep on with the blending the 8" tubes are perfectly enough for that (if you are happy with the brightness), LC vs. AC is a bigger deal than 8" vs. 9" IMHO.

Funny. my opinion is the opposite. The upgrade from 8" to 9" was more significant than the upgrade from AC to LC.

Generally an upgrade to 9" always means you end up with an LC machine. I can't recall ever hearing of a 9" AC machine.

Upgrading from AC to LC with the tube size and type staying the same will result in higher contrast ratios and better light control in the tube/lens system,
plus for reasons of improved cooling you can run the tubes at higher contrast levels.

Assuming you alread have LC coupled lenses on both sets, going from 8" to 9" tubes give you several possibilities: With something like 50 percent more available phosphor surface to work with, you can have higher resolution, improved MTF at any given resolution, more available brightness, and the ability to run the tubes at a lower brightness range to achieve extended tube life but with the same on-screen brightness as you had with the 8" machine. When I upgraded, I jumped right from an 8" AC Marquee 8000 to a 9" 9500LC. The total difference in picture capabilities was considerable. Picture quality went from very good to WOW.
