I ran into a used motherboard that wouldn't boot, it was missing the L2 cache. It wouldn't get past the POST. I shut off the L2 cache and it booted fine. Ran slow though. Ended up scavenging an L2 chip and upgrading it to 128k cache. MUCH faster then.
Games ran so much better in Win95.
So yes; I can see where you adding an L2 chip would speed things up.
