I'm considering a Radiance VP for both video processing and switching. My pre-amp does not have HDMI.

If you feed the XS or XE a signal over HDMI does it split/pass the audio out over coax? If so are there any lip sync issues?

Is there a need for the number of inputs and outputs of the XE in a typical home theater?

Yes, the Radiance will be able to send audio through both HDMI outputs and a coax simultaneously, or through only one of the three depending on how you configure it. You can do about anything you want. There are no lip-sync issues at all.

How many inputs you require depends on your setup really.

One thing regarding HDMI audio. If you don't have the capability to process HDMI sound than it is usually better to just use coax instead of HDMI for sound. HDMI will work of course, but unless you need it, you will get better sound through coax. Really I only use HDMI audio with Radiance processors for sources that support HD audio standards. I usually recommend running coax into the Radiance for things like sat and cable. This is because HDMI has more jitter than coax and takes longer to sync.
