New or used. I just won a large job that I'll get paid for in about 60 days, so I want to invest some into the theater. I have done zero research, but have looked at Clarence's recent pix, and the front row looks great. Cliff's seats are super comfy, as shown by my asleep pix from a few years ago.
I do know what I want mostly:
-non power recliner. Non power everything for that matter
-either single/gangable, or a 3 seat section. Not sitting in the middle drives me nuts.
-leather most likely.
-cup holder
That's about it. I have no issues going used, and will start scanning Craigslist. I will use them almost nightly, so something that has good wear and tear would be good, but I don't want to spend thousands either.
Brands/recommendations?

What's your opposition to powered recliners, Curt? What I've found is that it's a rare unpowered chair that doesn't piss me off, because I can never get it in the right position and have it stay there for any length of time. While the power recline does add cost, complexity, and yes - it can be a little annoying have to wait wait the 3-4 seconds before you can get up or recline - my experience is that the tradeoff is more than worth it to not have a bunch of $%$#$% recliners that won't stay in the position where I'm comfortable.
I don't know if they're any good, but I've been browsing this site looking into seat-seat distances, prices, etc. while I'm fleshing out my room. They have pretty much everything in almost the entire range, from cheaper than I'd want to WAY more than I could afford.

Whatever you get and it may cost you extra, stay away from BONDED OR BICAST LEATHER! Roman over at AVS tries to pawn that sh$t off as being as good as regular leather, but it isn't.

So, "top grain" is what we're looking for then, right?
BTW, I updated my earlier post with the URL I forgot yesterday.

Congrats Curt! Is that the job that you sent your bid proposals to me. You really did an excellent job laying them out and deserved to get it. Way way way more detailed than any bid I've ever had to do.

Good points. I never wanted electric seats in my theater either, but you've made a persuasive argument. I'm kind of sick of my current seats and might look into electric this time around.
Thanks,

That seems to be Roman's latest competition at AVS...

They offer top-grain leather options and international shipping (including Canada).

thanks, but no, this is a smaller $40-50K job of an arena/rec centre upgrade. I'll be getting in lots of trade in gear as well...
The $250K casino is still pending.
The only reason I said manual seats is that many used ones I read about have issues with motors or mechanisms.
I'm keeping an eye out on stuff, new or used. I know a customer many years ago got a screaming deal at one of those Costco overstock places that sells Costco customer returns, but that was years ago, and I haven't seen Costco here in Canada carry anything in at least the last 5 years.

Interesting. It's generally just a switch, motor, and screw mechanism. I don't think it's really very trouble-prone at all to be honest. To me, it's a little like saying, "I don't want to buy a car with power windows because they could have issues." True, but I wouldn't own a car without power windows.
When I bought my chairs on eBay, I found out later they'd been submerged in water at some point. Strangely, the fabric was all perfect, and I couldn't even see anything wrong with the plywood. The only real evidence of water I found was that the little control boxes that had a simple low-voltage/line-voltage board, and the connectors for the switch and motor output on them were shot. Thy were badly corroded. So, I called the manufacturer and ordered new boxes for the two powered chairs, and I think they were about $50 shipped for both.
My manual chairs weren't too bad, but I much preferred the electric chairs because I could get the recline exactly like I wanted. The manual chairs seemed to want to be either fully-reclined, or this one position half-way between fully-reclined and locked upright. If you can go look at them and test them out, then I might be more inclined to go manual, but there's no way I'd order manual chairs without testing first.

This is where you are winning me over. My recliners are either fully back or fully up unless you stay perfectly balanced and pretty much motionless... or until a cat jumps on your lap.

Just glanced at that thread. It looks like the owner designed these himself to overcome the shortcomings of the theater seats on the market. For the price, they look like a pretty good deal.
As for electric, I have a friend who replaces a lot of furniture mechanisms. From my understanding it is pretty simple. So, I wouldn't worry about the parts breaking unless they are hard to source from the manufacturer.
To expand on bonded or bicast, it is either an emulsion of leather fibers (sawdust or leather dust) or a split hide (the fleshy part that they used to throw away). To try giving it strength and durability, they usually put a thick coating over the top. As I have said in the past, this is kind of like trying to have your paint hold up your wall. I should also add that there is also a leather looking material that is fabric underneath the coating. This is even worse than bonded although will probably be labeled as bonded.

Prices do seem very good on all offerings. I like the ones with the wood arms. The whole set of three cost less than one of my current seats did.
I am really picky about seating comfort though so buying ass unseen is scary for me.

Cir,
You might want to start a thread on AVS to see if someone in Chi has some of these chairs and if they would be willing to let you sit in them. There has to be someone nearby.

Craig! Craig!
Talk about stupid. Maybe we should have looked at the website. I was reading the thread on AVS and read where a guy went into the showroom and tested the chairs out. Guess where the showroom is? Throwing distance from your house.
http://www.htmarket.com/homtheatshow.html
Just so everyone knows, the showroom is in Uptown Chicago.
Heck, you might even be able to get some business out this.
