Does anyone have access to MX-850 software for programming the remote? or...is there a link somewhere? Doesn't seem like I can pm anyone just yet but let me know if you have anything that'll work.

Thanks

Damn! I JUST threw away an install disc last week. Someone on AVS sent it to me. I know it is floating around somewhere.

greg_mitch,

That's too bad, URC makes a nice product but seem a little shameful to hold folks hostage with their software. I've been looking for a little over a week so far... Hope my MX-980 doesn't turn into an expensive paper weight.

URC isn't "holding folks hostage" with software. There's nothing "shameful" about it. They're simply supporting their customers - dealers - according to the agreements they made in selling a dealer-only protected product. If you bought that dealer-only product knowing full well it wasn't intended for resale, then how is that URCs fault?

Any manufacturer that wants to do business with channel customers (resellers) is in a tough spot. If the manufacturer supports customers by allowing them to work on their own remotes, then they cut their own dealers out of business and the dealers then look to their competitors for a more "protected" product.

I know this situation intimately well from all three perspectives - manufacturer, dealer, and end-customer. The allure for manufacturers to work with dealers and distributers and cut out direct sales is strong because you can sell premium products to a group that knows how to sell them, and your marketing dollars can have a multiplier effect (sell 10 or 20 remotes a year to a customer instead of one). There's a reason companies like URC all but eliminated their direct sales and went channel-only. However, as an end-customer, I HATE the concept.

The whole "protected product" model annoys the crap out of me so much, that at this point, I will seek out and support only manufacturers that sell to DIYers. Screw URC. If I had their stuff, I'd sell it all and use something else. If I ever have my own business in the CE industry, I will NOT sell a protected product. I'll offer discounts to distributors and resellers, but I will not be a part of profit protection. Think along the lines of Apple, Sonos, or Oppo. All sell to resellers, but also sell direct, and are very successful doing so. I think the protected distribution model is obsolete, dying, and soon enough, "middle men" and their "protected products" will be a thing of the past. If dealers want to compete, let them compete on knowledge, expertise, and service - not just on exclusivity and preferential pricing. Pricing should be based on quantity and nothing else.

Given all that, the URC situation breaks down as follows:
1) If a guy had his URC stuff professionally installed years ago before URC went to the protected/channel model, and was told he could self-support it, then URC and/or the dealer should get the software to the end-user per the contract.

2) If a guy bought his URC stuff from a dealer and is now trying to run around behind the dealer and maintain the stuff himself, then shame on him. The dealer makes his livelihood selling and maintaining the product, and the end-customer agreed (probably explicitly, but certainly implicitly) that it wasn't a DIY product. It wasn't intended for DIY. Either pony up and pay the dealer to maintain the stuff, or sell the hardware and get a product made for DIYers that's supported.

3) For guys who bought the stuff used on ebay or whatever, whether Crestron, AMX, or URC, then to put it bluntly, I don't really have any sympathy. Again, the product is a professional dealer-only product, and everybody damn-well knows it, so the manufacturer is certainly under no obligation to support their products for DIYers. They're obligated to support their products for THEIR customers - their dealers. In that case, people are buying unsupported products then expecting support. It makes no sense. Again, pony up and pay an authorized dealer to maintain the stuff, or sell it buy products which are designed to be used by DIYers.

Sorry for the rant. The subject is near and dear - for several reasons.

Ecrabb,

I appreciate your feedback you provided. However, Point blank it says in the manual that URC software is available on their website "www.universalremote.com" then it goes on to say they reccomend that you use a professional installer to program your remote. It's their words not mine. It appears to me that they are not holding true to their published word.

Respectfully,

I'm in the same boat. My hard drive crashed, and I can't find my backup. Any luck getting it?

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has the Mediator for MX850. I have a 2005 version but do not communicated with my remote. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Babak
