I noticed watching Fargo on DISH that I had a "line" where my 2.40 aspect ratio would normally be.But just on the top part. The image above the line is brighter than the image below. The image below has a kind of pinkish tint. Its very slight but I notice it. I thought it was just an issue with Dish but was watching a 1.85 AR movie last nite and there it was again. Granted I am probably the only one who notices it and it is only noticeable it bright scenes but it bugs me. Any ideas ?

I had no idea that was possible. Someone told me once that the white warm up screen (that everyone says to turn off) is there to stop this problem to some extent. I have no idea and it really doesn't matter at this point. I don't have the computer, software or skills necessary to fix this problem so I guess I will just learn to live with it for now, until I install new tubes or go digital. Probably the latter though not looking forward to it.

I have a set of tubes. I was hoping to get some more life out of these. It really isn't bad yet and if I watch 2.4 AR which is 90% of what I watch I have no issue at all. I was kinda hoping I wouldn't have to ask craig to come all the way out here till I either got a radiance or a new PJ or both. Although it would be nice to hang out again.

Hey Jeff,

Because 2.35 is 90% of what you watch, you are getting uneven wear between 2.35 and 1.78. You have several options to either slow the progression or even reverse the uneven wear. If you keep doing what you are doing than the line will only get darker. Your tubes are not wearing out prematurely, they are just wearing unevenly because you watch so much more 2.35 tan 1.78.

Since you use the Lumagen HDQ runnin 817p 2.35 at 72Hz, the simplest and most effective remedy would be to reposition the image for 2.35 on the face of the G90 tube. I would suggest moving the image for 2.35 up on the screen, and across the line by about 2" from where it is now. To do this, just use the "center" adjustment for green, then red, then blue. Move the image up and then adjust your masking system for the new positions. Be sure to do this in the G90 only for the 2.35 memory with the Lumagen running.

After some months, or between 500-1000 hours, move the 2.35 image down about 4" to below (2" below the original line) where the original line is. As the tubes age the line will have migrated and the burn in will become less noticeable or disappear. The earlier you catch this and make the change the less time it will take for the burn in line to reduce or disappear.

Another option is to watch 2.35 with 1080p trough the Lumagen (on memory A) which is 1080p 60Hz for you. You can then zoom the image with the Lumagen by 5% to push the image past the burned in line. This will eventually start to wear level the tubes. I don't like the zoom technique though because it forces all material to be scaled and overscanned. You will loose image front he sides as well because you are zooming it off the pixel map.

Does the white warm up screen wear level the tubes ? Is that the entire purpose of it ? If so does it burn through phosphor at a much faster rate ? Just curious.

Nope, it warms up the machine quicker.

So I did what Craig suggested and adjusted my masking and moved the 2.35 image up 2" above where the wear line was. I am running 817P @ 72 hz out of the lumagen HDQ on memory B. After moving the image I adjusted the center and then spent an hour dialing in zone. The image is great except for one problem. The B image is darker and has less shadow detail, a lot less. To get close to what it looks like on 1080P 60 hz I would have to increase the brightness by 8 running it at about 63. Any ideas ?

I have some wear on the right side of my tubes. Shifting the raster slightly away from the wear line helped me notice it less.

Ok so in order to watch the 2.35 AR 817 @ 72 hz I have to have the brightness set at 70. Then it looks the same as 1080P @ 60 hz when the brightness is set at 55. So how fast is this high brightness setting burning up my tubes ? The 72 hz setting looks amazing in brighter scenes but still doesn't look as good as 1080p 60 in darker scenes, even with the brightness set at 70. Is there any way to COPY the 1080P 60 settings to the 2.35 AR and still leave the position 2 inches above "the line" ? My wife even asks "whats wrong" when we watch 2.35 now.
