Mine shipped the next day. I'm going to try to fix Justin's VDM using parts from extra VDMs I have. This way if the amps blow at least they are the older versions. Got his CVA going while not on the heat sink, once I get the VDM going I'll test both together on the heat sink.

I was testing Caps with my LCR meter( no ESR) and found some interesting traits.

With high value lyrics tested 470uf and 560uf changing the frequency on the LCR meter changes the value little from 100hz to 120hz but when you hit 1khz the uf double almost, when tested with a 22uf lytic not much of a change.

Now I tried a wet tant 120uf it stayed stable with 100 and 120hz but went lower to 75uf with 1 kHz.

Now I have some Oscons these were the most stable, no major change across the three frequencies. I wish they made these in higher voltages and uf ranges!!!!

Since Mike used a 16 volt 33uf dry rant on the CVA I might now use either the new PosCons there or some Os cons I have 20vdc
values .

Probably the big cap fools your tester...
At the university we measured some caps with a professional Wayne-Kerr component analyser, that could measure up to 3MHz. Unfortunately the caps didn't have the same capacitance rating, yet it is obvious how they are related.
The upper diagrams shows the effective capacitance vs. frequency, the lower shows where is the resonant point of the cap, after the resonant point the cap behaves more like an inductor instead of a capacitor.
You can speed up a capacitor if you connect with them parallel faster ones, so for example if you connect parallel an 1uF foil cap and a 100-200nF ceremic cap with a standard 470uF electrolytic cap, it can make wonders, and cheaper than buying individual magic caps.

Yep, and that's the main reason why you won't find expensive designer caps in video circuits. There's really no need or benefit to using them.

Nash,

Can You share this mod's functionality with us? It looks to me like an additional ROM which feeds the D/A converter for the vertical deflection signals. Somekind of automatic aspect ratio or anamorphic adjustment?

Regards,

It looks like the banding mod.. I asked about that mod once, but there was never any feedback that confirmed it working, and it was way to expensive for my taste.

I had that mod also.

It works, but at the same time, you WON"T be able to adjust the convergence in some of the zones. Not if the problem was vertical direction or horizontal, but you'll not be able to get all zones to align. Not sure why the mod had this effect on the the convergence.

Also, and if you're running really high resolutions, it'll make some areas on the screen appear too dense (scan lines pressed together).

From what I tested it seems ok so far..... but that was a rough convergence and at 1:30 am i really wanted to get it done.

There did seem to be a few spots that were off but I noticed my convergence timing is off and I have to adjust than first, and then adjust the geometry alignment as well. I think the former is what is key. But doing the geometry alignment is more difficult than the convergence timing. And if that is the case it be hard for the end user to use unless they know how to do those timings.

I think the key is very short wire lengths. Mine are a bit long but I think the shorter would be better.

It is a bitch to do tho.

Well I came up with a better method to do this mod. the one earlier in the post takes a long time. Then i tried another way but that also did not optimally end well. had some issues due to connection problems etc.It was causing a LVPS short but on the 24 volt line!! No 24 volt line on CLM so the signals to the CVA must be crossing on that mod. But this last method seems the best but one issue is the Upside down socket I used pops off. I can try to solder it to the chip under it but that can cause some short between pins. It may have to be hot glued down. I only did a rough convergence on my not set up well test PJ in my shop, no scheimfluge , corner focus, astir and greyscale etc. its just my PJ i test stuff in case I blow up something I won't care Wink

Here are some pics.

First some beer… Very Happy

What I did was bend out the clips not used and cut them off. Then
I soldered the programed banding Chip to the upside down Socket.

Here you can see the socket upside down on the board chip with the new chip on top.
I had to cut out the angled corner to get it to fit. I might leave the angle and just force it on next time to hold the socket onto the existing board chip.

And the rough convergence. There was no banding. With this method I won't be afraid to try it on one of my Longbows.

Very Happy

Re organized the Test bed area so I can now freely swivel the marquee around for testing
by moving the Sources from the PJ table to their own table.

And my messy work bench. I moved the scope from where the Sources are now( different table).

I had a drill press on the left side of the work bench but moved it to a new spot on its own table. When drilling, metal shavings would fly onto PBC boards !! Not good if you know what i mean.

Yep that was my plan scot but I couldnt find the right gull wing connectors to go from SMD to PIN's

Can you email me the part numbers? I did it another way I reversed the socket and left the chip on the board but still had to lift the dac pins.

Just put my PJ back in to the shop after the Solar panel Inverter instal.

I made the table smaller and I have more room to walk around it and still kept the turntable feature.

Watch the video below to see how I have it set up.

Got the Boards back! Now when I find some time I'll have to see if they fit correctly.
Other wise I'll have to make adjustments to my original design and have another set made.
Lining up the parts so they fit over the top of the existing
parts is a challenge . I hope I got it right the first time.

On the one set with out the cap pads I forgot a via for the power pin on the DAC0800, but
I can jump a fly wire to it.

Hopefully in the next few days I can get to this and see how they work.

Had to try a mock up!!!

From what I can see underneath I think I lined up the DAC pads pretty well. The cool thing
is on the other side the pads for the socket are much longer than the DAC pads you see on top.
So there is wiggle room to place the socket side to side, but if the pads are not lined up the long way
then I'll have to make another attempt. I few tenths of a mm I might be able to
make it fit.

On the next board I will try to angle some of the traces and also
add a mounting hole in the same location of the existing one on the CLM and the
SWB. Then the board will be kept in place with the screw to stand offs.

looks like Pani just released a new line of Hybrid caps in SMD and through hole, ultra low ESR, high ripple rating

Quote:
Panasonic Electronic Components manufactures Capacitors in a broad range of technologies that can be used in the most demanding applications. OS-CON parts are characterized by a long life span and minimal changes in ESR throughout the entire rated temperature range. POSCAP (Tantalum Polymer) parts demonstrate a high reliability and high heat resistance, making them the ideal Chip Capacitor for digital, high-frequency devices and more. The SP-Cap (Aluminum Polymer SMD) line from Panasonic consists of multiple series that offer capacitance range up to 560µF, voltage range from 2V to 16V, and the lowest ESR/impedance in the industry, achieving very good noise suppression and transient response. Unlike MLCCs, SP-Caps are free from temperature drift and DC/AC bias characteristics. The EEH-ZA and the EEH-ZC series take the benefits of both electrolytic and aluminum polymer capacitor technologies and combine them, producing a capacitor with low ESR, low leakage current, high ripple current and smaller case sizes.
