Yo Nash,
What 9" tubes are you using here? Looking at the pictures, I think I know. It looks like something I've seen before Wink

Not Thomas Chip. These are NOS VDC LCP09's.

But funny you should bring up the tubes. I have an issue with one red tube on the right PJ. The ones I had to swap the red
and Blue G2 wires at the HVPS connector. Red G2 i did not notice how high it was set due to using the marquee control program.
I went back in to look via the remote because I noticed my Black levels are not equal between PJ's.
my red G2 on the Right PJ is set at 72!!!! and the left is 54. I think I have a bad tube out of that lot we got.

Unless the con act between the HVPS and the Connector is not as complete as it should be causing a lower
voltage to be sent to the red .

So any of the techs here would a not optimal contact cause me to use such a high G2 level ?

And one more thing I had to deal with not PJ related. My house when built had to have 19 foot foundation walls and 1 foot footer.
Then the space was filled with 3-5 inch stone. the beam posts are set on slabs on top of that stone. I live on a main county road
and get lots of heavy traffic which has caused the stone to settle quite a bit over time. So I have to crank the threads on the posts
to raise the house and keep the posts solid and not loose. Well the PJ's are bolted to the floor joists even though my theater is a
separate room with in the basement and its ceiling joists( 2x4's) are not connected to the floor joists. Hanging the PJs from the
2x4 was not an option so I went up to the floor joists.

So now that I have jacked the hopuse up the pother day I also moved the PJ's, especialy the left one about 1/2 inch
according to the miss alignment of the grid to the right PJ. Shocked Shocked So i had to re converge, align, whatever
the PJ's again!!!

But because of raising the red G2 to 71 and having elevated the black level I had to lower Brightness to 13. I tried doing the
by eye set up with bright at 50 and contrast at 50 then using the internal patters but I have to raise red G2 way up
and that causes the elevated black forcing me to lower brightness to 13 compared to 31 on the other Pj.

But I am not in the mood right now to investigate further, I watched a little of Star trek again and it looks damn good.

I still have to work on Focus, Chip Wink but i'll get to it once I figure out the red G2 issue. i hope I don't have to drop the red and
try another one. I think that would be easier to fix than the red G2 contact.

Say Nash

Are you saying you have to use G2 at 71 to light up the red?

Put your voltmeter on the tip of R76 on the red neckboards of both projectors and report back

you mean do this Wink

Tim Martin Wink wrote:
Troubleshooting Marquee Video Problems Without A Scope

One does not always have the luxury of a dual trace scope on the road,
here are a few norms to test for if your Marquee has high voltage and
picture problems, like flashing, or no pix at all, or one color is weak:

Vim Mini Coax Levels, Unplugged From VNB:

With CONT of 40 and BRITE of 40, the tip of the mini coax feed
gives 110mv with internal stairstep, 255mv on white field.

Internal Pattern Sequence is 1) Hatch plus Dots,
2) Dots Only, 3) Stairstep, 4) Full White, 5) Source

G2 Values and Voltage, measured at tip of VNB R76:

G2 of 40 gives +375vdc
45 +415vdc
50 +462vdc
55 +510vdc
60 +555vdc
65 +600vdc
70 +646vdc

Fluke DVM dc limit is 655vdc and goes into alarm mode.

Brightness Control Line to VNBs, P13 Pin 8:

BRITE of 0 gives +2.02vdc
10 +1.59vdc
20 +1.19vdc
30 +0.81vdc
40 +0.37vdc
50 - 0.02vdc
60 -0.44vdc

We have observed Marquees with leaking glycol where this control
voltage was shorted to +5v on the MB and as a result the tubes shut
down for no apparent reason; you would think you had a bad VIM
or neckboard but it was not so.

I'll try later to see if I am close to 646vdc Not sure if my DM goes that high.

I can pull out my scope, will that handle that high voltage?

Even tho I have the strange settings the image looks really good. Focus looks worse in these pics that it is in real life for some reason . Usually my screen shots look better. I'll test the G2 on the right PJ tomorrow I adjusted the red drive a bit higher and the G2 up a few notches and lowered the green drive a bit as the right side had a greenish tint, ever so slightly. Did it by eye and left the Radiance calibration as it was. Surprisingly they looks pretty good.

Hey Nash

Need for 70+ G2 with 650 volts on a new tube would be unusual

yeah that is what I was thinking myself. So today i'll pull the cover and test G2
on the red tube just to make sure the possible weak contact on the HVPS
connector is not the issue. If it is low I'll first try another HVPS if it still is low then
it must be the weak contact of the red G2 connector on the HVPS harness.

I just recently put the red neck board cover on and closed it up. I never noticed
the issue before that, I wonder if i may have disrupted something on the VNB,
maybe the G2 connector there?

Crap!!!! Hope it is a bad VNB then or HVPS, they are easier to swap out.

But if it is the tube I think I'll just run it as is for now I have a fairly decent
calibration.

Ok Home now going to test the red G2, my probe only goes to 600VDC, i might have to bring in the scope.

Yep, 650 VDC steady. Its the tube I think.

But using the method for setting white balance by eye on Tim's site I have to crank it that high.

So yeah it is the tube.

WTF Out of the 4 new VDC red tubes I choose one that is bad, thank God the other red was fine.

SO I guess I'll run this as is since it shouldn't harm anything and it is still sharp. Wonder why it is as it is?
its a tube with all the magnetics so VDC must have tested it when setting up the Coils etc.

Well I'm off to go buy the wood for my frame. Finally!!!!

i'll need three 1x6x14 footers !!!! Very Happy

Thanks , little by little I am getting it better and better. Did electronic Astig last
night and noticed that even tho these tubes are set up at VDC just changing geographical
location will alter the CPC magnet set up. So one day I'll do those. none of the bright dots
are centered and electronic astig does not get you there. I can see a little bleeding on
grid lines and dots. Once that is nailed down it will be a little more sharper.

Yup

There is no such thing as "pre-aligned", the flare setup must be done in place.
