my listening couch is an overstuffed leather couch. it's ugly, it's purple and for some reason i really really like it. did i mention it's ugly?

but it has no cup holders and i keep thinking that i could put them in. after all, someone out there much be making those inserts and it shouldn't be much harder than cutting a hole in the arm leather, removing the appropriate stuffing, insert the "cup" part and then snap on the retaining ring.

i talked to my upholsterer guy and he doesn't touch that sort of thing and he hates thinking outside his box.

any ideas here on how to add cup holders to an existing couch? without shipping the couch to the town of ResumeSpeed in Idaho?

I've been toying with this idea. We didn't do theater chairs in the theater because couches with recliners are much more family friendly and a 89" couch can hold more people (or kids at a party) then 3 theater chairs can.

So, I've been toying with this.

For the inserts, you want to buy poker table inserts. Like these:

I've been toying with different designs instead of putting them into the couch, but even that would be easy. Cut the fabric/leather in an X, life fabric, then cut hole in arm rest, cut somemore slits to radius the fabric, then fold under and staple. Insert cup holder. Done!

I'm also thinking about instead making a "box" that is upholstered and has the holder and attaches to the armrest on its curve down.

I'm also thinking about making armest inserts with cupholders that I can slide between the couch's 3 seating positions to essentially make individual chairs out of the couch.

I bought my Berklines as floor models and had to repair one of the cupholders... someone had stepped on the arm or sat on it and crushed it. The pleather cover removed easily. I was shocked at how flimsy the frame was... cardboard and plywood.

Anyways, if you can remove the cover from the armrest, try to rig up some sort of structure to support the cupholder from underneath. Otherwise, I think a x-acto knife and some gorilla glue around the rim of a cupholder would be sufficient to hold a cup.

I don't like extra lights in my HT, but I though I'd provide a link to these...

Here are some standard black plastic ones, very affordable ($18 for eight) and very similar to what the Berklines use...

Notice the screw holes on the bottom... those screw into a plywood frame in the armrest.

this forum is bloody awesome.

thank you Clarence and Dave for the great links. now i have to make a decision...

i never thought about poker table inserts (the stainless is nice) but that's not surprising as i've never set foot in a casino or watched texas hold'em. just no interest. and no cheerleaders. gambling would be so much more interesting with cheerleaders.

i was hoping for a rim that snapped onto the cup to pinch or grab the leather of the arm, but if i machine a ring to go under the cup lip i should have enough to get a purchase between the leather and the rim with some gorilla glue.

this forum never ceases to amaze.
