I don't even think any liquid was spilled into the unit. Looks like 'natural' causes. Smile Freakin' thing reeks!

Did a solder joint directly from the AC rail hit chassis ground?

Looks like it smoldered after the AC chokes, but before or at the bridge rectifier. Yeah, pretty scary. Frigging Sony!

There's a really good chance that a new PS board is available for it on ebay. Check the bay by the model number.
