I see very few threads here on Ampro projectors. Does mean they are very reliable?

No. It means they are all pretty much dead and forgotten about.

Heyyyy, no disrespecting the Ampros! Smile

Less were sold than Barcos and MArquees, and probably NECs, but overall the later sets were just as reliable as the other major brands.

Early. It helps counter the calls from some New Yawkers that don't realize the West Coast is 3 hours behind their centre of the universe. Smile

Yes. And anyone that tells you other wise has never owned one......

And there were lots made. Not many on the market yet because the military is still using them.....

Yep the low profile is perfect for the Ships and Sub they are used in.

Interesting! Are we talking later model 4600 units, all of the ampros? Wonder when those will come out of service. Who even does the service on these?

Imagine the confusion that a CRT service tech must feel onboard -- tubes, guns, etc! Actually, I bet onboard a sub it sounds a lot like my HT! Let's think...to get ready for a movie...

"Make preparations for getting underway."
"Rig for silent running"
"Gunner to the projection room. Ready the guns. Guns ready."
"Flood images onto tubes one, two, three. Tubes one, two, three ready."
"Make a frequency sweep and lock frequencies. Frequencies locked."
"Viewing party, report to projection room"
"Does anyone need to dry their bilges?"
"No. Permission to heat popcorn and open the hatch"
"Fire all tubes."
And then the room says "Oh Oh double Oh!"
My wife can be heard muttering, "Sugar Dog, this is awesome"

This was pathetic. Permission to prepare to surface...HERE is the source material...

I assume you meant DC-9 service, Tim... Because, if you were on a DC-3, then I don't want to know what you're doing with your time when you're not doing A/V and projector work. Wink

What is that number?

Serial number from Ampro 4600 nameplate.
I assume that the B is a design sequence as in second gen and the 46 denotes the model as in 4600. These are only guesses of course.

This is the one that was hanging from my ceiling up until it started giving me a few challenges. My neck doesn't bend toward the ceiling for long at a time so I took it down for repair. My question is its vintage ie) is it an earlier one reputed to have reliability problems or am I abusing it. ?

If depends on how good your eyes are really. There are "fan boys" of Ampro's that will scream bloody murder if you say things negative about them. I haven't seen any issues with them myself. Not saying there are issues. Just haven't seen too many. But then again some out there claim that the 4600's are as sharp as 9500 LC's or G90's. I do not believe the claim because it would be more well known. From what I have seen, they are NOT as sharp as a G90! Some will cry and say they are but from the few I have seen, they are close but are not as good and will claim they are even but that is just to make themselves feel better about their projector. I know this because I know a guy that does this about his Cine7. He claims it is sharper than my 1208s-2 with HD145 lenses. To his eyes yes.....to mine no! I am still using a 1208S-2. I swear by it's picture quality but to others there eyes may see things different and it could very well suck for all I know. Sure I plan on hanging a VV1. But I am claiming to say it is better than what I currently have? No that will be for my eyes and not some else s. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise until you have had a chance to view yourself.
