I need some help in deciding the fate of my two marquees. Wife wants to do some remodeling and whats one of the marquees gone. I have been asking Dragan and Gannon and now would like to ask around here for opinions. One is a 9500lc with 4k on the tubes (Green is about a 7, Red is 8, Blue 8) with Mike Parker mods to VIM and neckboards. It has the dreaded hd10ls on it as well. The other pj is a Dragan modded 8500ac with color filtered lenses and new tubes. I appreciate the input.

What exactly are you asking here? Id think it was a no brainer if youre asking which one you should keep.

And if you want my advice, keep them both. What does it matter to your wife if you have 2 or not? If i had a wife ( and i dont ) and she said one of your CRTs has to go, id be saying "this is my place, and the door is that way, close the bars***d on your way out!!" Laughing

Id swap drags boards over to the 9500LC. pull all the boards and power supplies from the AC unit and keep them for spares incase. sell the AC tubes recycle the chassis.

Whats so hard about that decision?

Very Happy

I've never had an LC, but I would think "9" LC with worn tubes" is not a no-brainer win over "new 8" tubes and color filtered lenses." Color filtering makes a **BIG** difference and he's not likely to find colored C-elements for the LC.

Based on your title of this thread, I didn't think the question was about the projectors.......... Laughing

I'm with Gary on this. It's easy for the people NOT spending the money to say a fixer upper 9500 sweating Glycol is a "no brainer". They're not paying $2K for tubes, $300. for new bellows and Glycol, and $500. for the correct lenses. Oh and if you want to filter the Red be prepared to spend another $300. assuming you can even find a Red C.
This is why I've only re-furbed one 9500 in 8+ years. Fricking money pits and not worth the thousands of dollars for a 10% improvement over a good 8". Just my opinion of course

I agree with some of what you are saying. But I would move the dragon boards, retube with new bellows, find a way to add the lenses from to 8500 to the 9500 and you supliment the cost of some of this by selling the new 8500 tubes. Remember....it will not take as much time to get the same amount of ware on a 8 tube when compared to the 9. And the 8 tube is still a non-lc. Is it worth having the LC....yes!

Actually, keep both without keeping both. Strip down one set for spare parts, but keep the tube and lenses and top and bottom tube mounting rails. THat will get you down to 1 set, with the option of 100% replacement parts and a spare set of tubes.

Yeah Curt version is better than mine. but along the same lines with out selling the AC tubes. I still think a 7 green has lots of life left. The 9500LC i redid for Greg Hoye was about a 7 and it still had a really good calibration.

Unless you're watching 6 hours a day, I think the chassis will wear out around the tubes. That's what I'm telling almost all CRT purchasers now that put under 1000 hours a year on their sets. No need really to keep spare tubes, but definitely keep the sets if you want to play with them, or use the 9" now until they are significantly worn, then drop in the 8" in 4-5 years.

But what if he can only have one? Having core parts from the other one hanging around is cheating. At least that is what my wife would say. Mr. Green

Damn right they are. The problem is that these days you can find entire PJ's with good tubes that cost less than tubes by themselves. From a "value" perspective these are never easy decisions.

I went to look at VV1 yesterday (the guy was asking $3K) and the tubes were about a 3 (massive text burn). I told him that as a whole the PJ was worth about $300 and that if he really wanted to make money he should part it out. He wasn't to thrilled with that assesment but it's the reality of a market place where good tubes carry a huge premium.

Now what you do is wait 2-3 weeks, and call him again. As a parts unit with the fancy case, it's definitely worth $300. If he's honest and discloses the tube condition, no one outside of your driving area will offer him anything, and it will sit there.

I get lots of sets that way, sit back and wait... then make a followup call or email. Smile

And that's how I got this 9500 emailed and waited.

He already removed the listing from Videogon. The case will need a lot of work; the finish has cracks everywhere. I looked at that local B-stock G90 as well. Another guy who thinks he is going to sell his unit for the same price as what a pro would get. He offers no waranty, no tech support, no set up help, etc. It's just like selling a car; a private person will never get what a dealer will.

Me either. Keep both projectors, if she wants you to give up something that clearly has some sort of meaning and value to you, the "she" is not a keeper. Would you ask her to give up something she is passionate about and has put alot of effort into?

Haha logic isn't a factor in THAT equation. Unfortunately rail roading over a SO's interests is a common theme, especially here in the US. The male populace need to grow a pair.....

The way I see it...if she can have 5 f*cking sewing machines, I can have two projectors. The fabric alone takes up half of the house.
