I swapped out my HD10L's last night in favor of HD10F's off a G90. My screen is 80" wide and with the 10L's I couldn't get perfect focus near the L/R edges. A few interesting observations upon installation:

1) I immediately noticed bow at the top center of the image. With my 10L's everything was dead on (I spent hours getting the geometry right when doing set ups with the 10L's..)

2) Also noticed that the vertical grid lines on the right side of the screen (1/4 of the way from the right screen border) were crooked. This means I'll have to tweak geometry again...argh!!!!

3) I did the scheim-f*ck adjustment again and was able to get better focus at the right and left edges. I used the resolution test pattern from the DVE disc with the tiny alphabet and symbols. Interestingly enough I noticed that the focus at the left screen border was just a hair better than on the right (and I spent 5 hours screwing around trying to make it 100%perfect). This leads me to believe that there might be slight differences between the individual lens.

Thus far it looks like a lens swap is not entirely plug and play. It would appear that to really optimize everything I'll have to do a full mechanical set up again on the R/B guns . It looks like I shouldn't have to do too much to the green geometry, hopefully just touch ups on right and left sides where the aforementioned issues exist.

Perhaps this is because of significant difference between the curvature of the lens. The 10L's have more curve than do the 10F's.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Am I doing something wrong?

Curt told me the other day that the 10L is only good for 70 diag on a 4:3 image. Which is probably why you could not focus your edges. I have seen this issue on a 1208 with HD-145's adapted. Took a complete static setup.

That's exactly why I installed the HD10F's; to get better focus at the edges. Did not expect there to be issues with distortion to my grid (neither did Curt as I already spoke with him about this). I'd like to know what's causing the issues.

BTW, what happens to the 'hook' at the top if you shrink the V height? Does it go away? Can you see the bend on the tube face while looking through the lenses?

I didn't adjust that out yet (that's tonight- round 2). I don't think I would reduce the V-size, rather I'd likely use the green random access controls to bring it back in line with the rest of the grid.

DELTA HD-10L (standard on Marquee 9000 model number 38-P13092-94)

This lens has been designed to give optimum performance with smaller screen sizes. It provides the best performance between the three lenses on screen sizes from 5’ (1524mm) to 9’ (2743mm) measured diagonally (4:3 aspect ratio).

According to the enclosed VDC Appendix; 10L's are good up to 71" wide; my screen is 80" wide so I don't get optimal focus at L/R edges.

dvh, those stats are definitely wrong, the max is 72" diagonal for the 10Ls.

It is normal to have to do a lot of geometry and focus when you swap lenses. Nothing wrong or out of the ordinary with that.

I don't think you will need to do any magnetic focus (though you might), but the geometry work you describe is typical. And absolutely you will have to do lens flapping all over as you know now.

Pardon my ignorance Craig; what does lens flapping mean?

Update: I adjusted the scheimf*ck for all 3 tubes (G yesterday and R/B tonight) and then went into to adjust the geometry on the green. All of the sudden these black dots appear on the screen in random locations. I cycled through the red and blue and there is no sign of this problem; only on green. I took off the PJ cover and tugged on the wires going to the VNB to see if maybe some type of noise but it had no effect.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

Check the Black Wires on the VNB that go over the RGM amp Chip. there are two wires. Pull them up off the RGB amp and see how it looks. Those are the heater filament wires and can carry some noise that can jump to the Cl 449 RGB amp .

Drags does a mod where they are moved under the PCB and he adds a ferrite choke on the wires.

I saw the post about that after doing a search- I tried and it made no difference. I pulled the lens and looked at the LC chamber, it's definitely some type of artifact as the phosphor shows no sign of degradation.

try to move the cables from the hdm and see what happens.
and try to keep the video cables away from the g2 cables that run along the 3 tubes.

Hey Dennis,

Moving the HDM cables was the very first thing I tried as well as making sure both the focus board and HDM were seated properly. Also checked connections on vertical/conv/astig boards on heatsink and couldn't detect any issues there either.

Ok Swap mini RCA on Vim from green to blue, blue to green, check if Green still shows dots or if they move to blue. if they are still there .If they are still there then go back to stock and swap the VNB from green to blue, see if it follows.

Report back
