I was just starting to put the finishing touches on this system when the career path pulls me to another location.
This was an esoteric system. Rigid custom screen incorporating special open baffle design LCR speakers and sub with special application winch system complete with mechanical safeties for raising and lowering the screen. Main system goal was that no equipment took up any floor space. The system performed very well.
While it took many weekends over the past 3 years to fabricate and install all this hardware, it all came apart pain free in just a few hours. I have to admit I was pretty impressed with myself.
Oh well, I was tired of this system anyway. I wanna build something new! Maybe CIH using both pjs with an AT screen. I'm going with (8) 18" woofs this next time around.

Very interesting design, shame you hadn't time to get it ready before ripping it down.

Did you get to at least test her out? I'm curious if you were able to get the accoustics right for the speakers. I've often wanted to dive into developing some home-grown speakers, but I know there is a science to the porting space, etc to get the peak response from the speaker. Was wondering if you were able to accomplish that in your design as well.
Impressive, yet simple, well done! Good luck with the move and the next design!

Nice...Alcoa must love you...I like the way you used the "L" brackets on the uni-strut...I did the same thing...I'm sure lags would work...I just like that method better.

I was at the point where the system worked well and I was ready to do final cosmetics such as finish carpentry to encase the screen hanger channels, wood side panels on the screen, a concealed wire tray that matched the walls, projector skirt, etc. Just never got around to it!

Thanks. Yes, the speaker system was fully designed and tested. The Tannoys got a new filters and transfer function (for example they lost their stock shelving network) and were tweaked and response shaped for the custom application. The dipole sub used very specific parameter drive units and some modest active response shaping to get in-room response to a smooth response and an f3 of 30 Hz. Xvr between LCR and sub was 60 Hz and integration was perfect. The Tannoys are superb home theater speakers. They are true point sources with precise dispersion and the best speech intelligibility I've ever heard. Regarding the sub, dipole bass sounds vastly better than closed or bass reflex, in my opinion, and the power response is much, much flatter, affording real audibility of bass pitch and timbre, even at low listening levels. They don't drone or thump like the typical one-note POS home theater sub. But they are hugely inefficient, thus the large surface area requirement.

Thanks, yes, I have a bit of a c-channel fetish.
I wouldn't trust lags through the bottom section of OSB engineered joists. So I bolstered on both sides of each of the four joists that supported both pj and winch contraption with 4' long sections of 3/4" plywood that nested on each side engineered joists and were RTV'd in place. I then conservatively opted for the fundamental support relying on bolts in sheer through those joists, hence the L bracket use throughout.
The provision for easy lateral adjustment of the strut was very useful too.
