|
|
I just picked a Runco DTV-933. I downloaded the NEC 6PGXtra Install and User manual. I powered up but did not hook up a source. I just wanted to see the hours run on the machine and tubes. It asks for a password: can that be reset or deleted without knowing the previous password? The machine ran for maybe 15 minutes and shut off by itself. I turned it back on and it shut down after a few seconds. On the back panel, there is a code flashing what looks like Fd. I looked in the NEC PG error codes list, also from Curt's site, and there is nothing that matches. Do I just need to hook up a source and try again, or is there something more nefarious???
Thanks

First thing you should do is check the 4 boards inside the metal case between the blue and the green tube, pull them all out and have a good look at them, one at a time, then put them back in. There may only be 3 cause its a 6 and might night have POINT.
At a guess this could be a few boards, but if its got a POINT board, pull that out cause at least the machine can run without it, and this can cause a shut down like that.
Next is the system board, and it has done it to me. Let me just dig up the code i got and ill post back... Mine would turn on, then would turn back off, and a few seconds later turn back on again with no function and the code.
The master password is 2580.

Thanks for your replies! This is my first CRT pj; pulling out the boards, what should I be looking for? Is that very straight forward? I've read through the primer, and also the info on the NEC on Curt's site that identifies the major components, but does not explain how to remove things. I'm not faint of heart, but I don't want to make anything worse!!

I had a look at the boards; only 3 of them. I pulled each one out and had a look. Nothing looked unusual to me; none of the components looked visibly fried.
I'm thinking that something happened while in transit from the seller's home, although he wasn't too enthusiastic about powering it up for me. Could a screw that got loose have lodged itself somewhere where it shouldn't be? The pj had previously been ceiling mounted, and I have it sitting on the floor for my tests.
While doing some digging, I found this post in the AVS forum: http://archive.avsforum.com/avs-vb/////showthread.php?s=cd8d7959ce59470e75affd83e601cf90&postid=3242551.
He describes what is happening to me: now that he mentions it, the blue is bright for a few seconds before it all shuts down. I would like to unplug the blue lamp as he did, but I don't even know how. HELP!!!

The blue lamp is what the genie comes out of to grant you your 3 wishes.
Sounds like to me it has something wrong with the G2 on the blue... But first off you need to try reseating those boards then see what it does.

Then you have probably a bad (blue) neck board, fortunately it is not very expensive to replace..

Corvetteman: I did reseat the boards you suggested I remove; no change.
What about this G2 thing? Where is the neck board? What do you consider "not expensive"?
I really appreciate your comments. I got rid of my older DLP projector because I wanted to go HD, and I've been reading a lot about the CRT projectors and decided to go that route. I was expecting a laborious set-up, but not this.

Well, I had the same simptoms about a year ago (however I can't remember what was the exact error code) and in my case it was a faulty neck board.
The neck boards are located at the end of each tube. The tube necks are shielded a bit so you can't access them directly. To access them you need to open up the deflection board first (the big board on the top with big heatsink) then you can remove the iron shieldings around the tube necks, unfortunately this is a bit time consuming, and the space is very tight. There is a possibility for other problem, so you should try to swap neck boards, but as I remember none of the other neck boards has long enough wires to connect them instead the blue, but electrically there are no difference between them.
Guys who parting out PG Xtras probably give you a neck board for 10-20$, in the US probably you will find a replacement board easily.
Once you got the machine go, you will love it

I poked around the machine for a few hours this evening. I'm still not sure how to unplug the blue tube to see if the machine will then run normally; how do I do it? Is the neck board the same as the CRT socket? I removed the lenses to look at the tubes more closely, and I did not see any cracks; nothing obvious anyway. In fact, the tubes look to be in good shape; they look new to me. I read something about a transistor that could be bad. Any other ideas?

Yes the neck board is what holds the CRT socket. The socket is the connecting device mounted on the neck board that connects the neck board to the tube.

Yes, the Neck board is the "same as" the crt socket (on some machines (like Plain PG or PG PLUS) the crt socket consist of a few passive -resistor capacitor, spark gap- components, but in the case of PG xtras the video amplifier is also on the neck board so we usually don't call it to crt socket, because there is much more on that board than a simple socket)
The easiest way to check it out to plug out the neck board. The neck board is connected to the closest board in the iron box (Gain CTL) at the end of the machine which has a lot of trimmer resistors on it (DON'T TOUCH THEM), so if you plug out the wide connector of the blue neck board then your machine will power up (at least we hope)
Topull the neck board you need to release it. There is a philips screw which holds the neck through a rubber(ish)ring this is what holds the board firmliy, again the room is very tight, you'll have to play to get out the board

Yes, you're right, but in this sense you can't swap socket without soldering it out... and I said it is "same as" not (exactly the) same, which is not the same
But we all know what we are talking about

Calling a neck board a CRT socket is like calling the intake manifold on an engine the same as an engine. Its not the same thing, one is a component of the other.
While we may know what we are talking about when these names are used, it is my personal opinion that for the sake of others that may have no idea and are making an effort to learn, the correct terms should be used.... Im sure you will agree with that.

I still need to test out the neck board to see if that is in fact the problem. If I needed to replace the neck board, is there someone in the Montreal area that could supply parts?

Put your blue neck board on either red or green tube, if the instant high brightness goes to that tube then the neck board went bad. (You don't have to connect any neck board to the blue tube for the testing, it is totally harmless)
