nobody runs a lower contrast than I do...but if you have a huge screen, you have to light it up. This is a factor...for sure.

Hence the G90 stack.

So Ben, what do you do with a 3 chipper if you don't have perfect convergence? For most all models, you're pretty much screwed.

Are you saying that convergence aside, you think it could put out a nice picture?

I'm sure it can. I haven't seen one myself (and I *have* seen Cliffy's stack) so I don't know how it would compare, but I assume it looks good. I'd be pretty surprised if it can look as good as Cliffy's setup. I'd be concerned about convergence issues, motion artifacts, color fidelity (assuming it's not Joe Kane), contrast (with 3 chips blasting I would think the low end would get pretty muddy), etc, but I assume it can at least look decent.

When the time comes to replace my 8500, I'll probably look at a DLP. I doubt I'll be in the 3-chipper ballpark and I don't like the convergence issues with those. I can't stand normal color-wheel DLPs because of rainbows, but as the LED DLPs improve those might become a viable option. Other than the non-convergence issues above...

If Art came down to see the setup, I think he would agree. I had a very prominent "pro digital" forum member from AVS here last weekend to see the setup and when we did the Finding Nemo shot, well, he shot his wad Smile.

Art wanted to go BIG screen and to go BIG, you HAVE to have a light cannon "digital". Even a quad stack will not cut it.

Cliffy!
So the question in my mind is what would Arts Sim2 HD5000 look on your screen in comparison to your stack? Or a Sim2 CX3 Lumis? And if they were as close as I think they would be, is crt the most practical technology to use?

These are just honest questions I have as I have no ax to grind yet. I'm still running a lowly Barco 9"er until I can figure out my next upgrade path. I don't own any G90's or digital Sim projectors yet. I have been doing some research though and it appears coming up with a used 3 chipper will be a whole lot easier and for a whole lot less money than even 1 G90 let alone 2 G90's at todays prices. You can buy a used Sim2 CX3 for $1500 on ebay. My thought process (which could be wrong) is that a CX3 which although only runs 720p, would probably out light and out ANSI contrast your stack. Thats the kind of shootout I would really love to see on a screen your size.

I've seen your screenshots Cliff and agree you have something very high quality to be proud of. But what I am wondering about is whether the stack can compete with the lower end 3 chippers at this point. Not to mention on going maintenance. I am planning some day to convert my screen (about 11 feet wide) to constant height in the best and most cost efficient manner. And honestly wondering about which direction to go.

I'm sure Cliff's stack is unfreakingbelievable....no doubt about it!

You meantion practicality above...we all know that in any implementation of a home theater, crt projectors are impractical...at least, they are a heck of a lot less practical than digitals.

Cliffs stack would win in some areas, and art's would win in others...it's a measure of what's important to your viewing, and...are you willing to setup a stack of G90's? I know I'm not...although, it would be fun...I just wouldn't lay out the cash for that.

maybe I overstated...sitting a projector on a shelf and turning it on and focusing it...

vs hours of installation of a huge, heavy and loud projector..twice..or three times. Then convergence and white balance and geometry of all three...perhaps endless amounts of time to get that right.

I should tone down my sentiment...it's probably a little over the top.
