To be honest...I have no need to upgrade it. W7 Starter works perfectly fine for what netbooks are to be used for. Does changing the background really get under your skin that much? Asus has a program that allows the background to change...not sure how they do it, but my Asus EEEpc can change its background in Starter.

But for surfing web, emails, word, excel, etc...the OS is more than capable.

For around $200 you can't really expect a full featured OS.

I got my n450 netbook for $180 refurbed over a year ago from cowboom.com

Yep it gets under my skin. I've been doing custom background since Windows 95, the mere fact that M$ did this pisses me off to no end. I knew I was getting a retarded OS when I bought this. However it's the little things that piss me off.

I can't find all the WinXP drivers yet or Win7 would be a sidebar of forgotten nothing in my brain by now. Laughing

EDIT: the other useless thing on here is complete lack of windows resolutions. It gives me an option for 640, 800 x 600 and 1280x720. EVEN with an external monitor. SUCKS.

Why not try to identify the file being sourced for the background, remove it with the one you want to use and just name it accordingly?

This is the key for acer ultimate:

FJGCP-4DFJD-GJY49-VJBQ7-HYRR2

Try that and report back.

If that does not work you may need to install the acer certificate. If that still does not work you may not have a SLIC built into your bios... but I have not seen that on any oem built since win7 came out.

Is the first part "FJGCP" usable for all brands?

I have an Asus EEEpc. Thanks.

Supposedly the key must match the certificate of the brand in question, but the certificates are not brand specific. They key for ultimate that goes with ASUS is: 2Y4WT-DHTBF-Q6MMK-KYK6X-VKM6G --- XXXXX-OEM-8992662-00173

This is what I get:

"ENTER A DIFFERENT UPGRADE KEY

The upgrade key you entered is for an edition of Windows that does not work with Windows Anytime Upgrade. Enter a different upgrade key."

How do I install the acer certificate?

All right Jeremy this is indeed starting to suck.

For starters, if I had your pc here i am sure I could get this going in no time. However, over the boards is another story. Since you are contemplating formatting anyway, I don' think you can get in too much trouble because worst case, you just format.

Almost certainly you have a win7 SLIC on the motherboard. However, it might be a good idea to check this first before you waste a lot of time. If you don't already have a SLIC for win7 than the motherboard requires a bios hack and this starts to become illegal. I only recommend doing these things if you already have a win7 SLIC in the bios.

The below thread has TONS of good information for you.
http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/7126-The-Official-Windows-7-Repository

To check your SLIC status, you need to download the SLIC dump toolkit called "SLIC_ToolKit_V3.2.rar" I googled and found a copy at the link below: http://www.mediafire.com/?32d40zdwgio

Unzip and run the program. The bottom left of the program will have a line called status just after it runs. It should say in green text something like "acer" and "v2.1." If not, you may not have a win7 slic. Click the "advanced" button and look at the slic diagnostics section. It should say acer and version 2.1.

Got that far?

The easiest way to install a cert and key is with the Opatool. You can download it here:
http://fs01n3.sendspace.com/dl/1f2b9d695f64cffa9ca656fd89e06435/4e788df32e4c3580/vpqdjc/OpaTool%20v0.7.exe

You can use Opatool to install the cert and then install a key. I think after that you will be activated with the version of win7 you choose. However, I never use Opatool and always have done these types of things manually with an elevated command prompt.

Also, I am not 100% sure that this procedure will work since you already have starter installed. You could always download a copy of win7 that is ultimate (or any version) and reinstall. When you reinstall, you don't enter any key for windows. Then after installation you run Opatool and this will work.

Based on this thread and what I remember from past experiences, you should be able to upgrade to Ultimate after you install just the certificate.

http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/13162-Got-SLIC-2.1-and-cert-upgrade-to-Ultimate

1) I think you should check your slic and make sure it is 2.1.
2) Run Opatool and only install the cert.
3) Go back to windows anytime upgrade and enter the ultimate key for acer.

That right there should do it in three easy steps.

On a fresh windows install in the future, install windows 7 without any key. Then install the cert with Opatool. Then enter the acer product key.

How do you install Windows 7 without a key? I thought it wouldn't let you move forward unless you entered a key.

If you just press next windows7 will advance and finish the install without a key. You then have 30 days to enter a key before the OS locks you out.
