|
|
Alright now that football season is over I was gonna redo my set up to try to get more PQ.
I guess the question I'm asking is should I do an entirely new set up from scratch?
Assuming I got at least the initial mechanical part correct, knowing that every electronic adjustment you make affects
the previous adjustment somewhat at what point do you begin ?
I honestly dont believe I will ever get 1080P. I cant get the DOTS right,I just cant. I dont know if its my vision or what
but I tried for a week straight, It only made things worse.
Are you guys ready for a month of dumb questions ?

Why should this month be different than any other?
But I wish you weren't so far away I would come by and help even though I know nothing about a Sony. I barely know what to do on my Marquee. {Not really true anymore}. It just takes time and more time of playing around with it and you'll get it.

Is there no other CRT owner close to you to assist from this forum? The G70 really isn't hard to set up, but you're probably like me, you learn a lot faster by having someone show you hands on how to do it than by reading a manual. That's the way I've always worked, I hate diving into something new with just a manual in hand.
and you're right, if you don't have astig/focus correct, it will look like crap, and you'll never get 1080p.

To add (someone else can correct/add if they want).
For G70/G90 astig/focus:
1) Set contrast to 100
2) put on sunglasses
3) Go into the focus menu, look into the lenses
4) defocus slightly with the first control setting so that you see a 'core' in the middle of the dot/line displayed. That 'core' needs to be dead center of your dot/line. THe second and third menu settings will shift the image so that the core ends up being in the middle:
http://www.curtpalme.com/Focus_and_Mechanical_Aim5.shtm
(the left pix above shows the core being centered within the dot)
5) Once the core is centered, use the 4th and 5th menu settings to shape the dot to be a circle if it's oblong, oval, or not round otherwise.
6) Go back to the first setting, and ramp the focus up and down. When all adjustments are properly set, the dot should remain perfectly round when over/underfocusing, and the raster should not shift as you adjust the main focus control.
7) Repeat ad nauseum for all areas of the set and all tubes.

Manuals have never been my strong suit, I'm not an engineer just a machinist. What comes natural to you guys leaves me lost.
I can grasp it better in a hands on enviroment.
I would love to have a real person help me with this, I dont know of any in this area though. I wouldn't mind covering expenses
if someone could help.

Hey Jeff,
I'm far from a G70 expert but I've set mine up on 720p, 1080i, 1080p and currently 1920x800p.
If you're willing to buy me gas and could give me a couch to crash on I might be able to drive down on a free weekend and help you get it setup.
Erik

No problem, My couch sucks to sleep on though would the hotel in town be ok ? It aint the Hilton but overall pretty good.
I would also pay you for a room traveling so you dont have to drive straight through.
I would love that ! I love my G70 and it really bothers me that I'm not touching its REAL potential.

Don't you have Graham's DVD on the Sony 1292? Didn't that help?

Yes I do have the dvd from graham, I would never have got it as good as I did without it.
But like I said before I just cant get 1080P.
I dont know what I'm doing wrong, but obviously missing something,I would love some help.
I keep trying and trying and trying,I'm just not getting there.
The 1080I is pretty good from my perspective but I know even that could be a lot better.

Well Erik's generous offer aside, if you are going to pay someone to come out why not pay a pro like Craig Rounds?
CIR Engineering on the forum. When he goes on tour the cost of travel is waived. It will cost more the Erik, but not too much more I think?
Drop him a P/M and see whats what.

Just a thought.
Not trying to Dis you Erik.

I did think about contacting craig once but I figured the travel alone would make it cost prohibitive on top of the usual fees.
My wife would freak if I told her I paid 1500 (or more I assume, I never got an estimate from craig )
I spoke to a guy that said minimum 1500 bucks, he was out of cincinnati and to be honest I didnt feel like I could trust him.
I dont mind paying for a worthwhile service but 1500 is closer to the end of my budget than the beginning.
If Eric would like to help I would appreciate it and make it worth his while also. Like you said it is a very generous offer.

Jeff,
I'll PM you my email address, send me an email and I'll see if we can work out something that makes sense for both of us.
-Cheers,
Erik
