I just managed to fix our XBOX 360 from the red ring of death. I took the motherboard out, removed all the heat sinks, protected the other components around the video chip with aluminum foil and then put the heat gun on it. It works now although I wonder how long it will last. It actually didn't take that long. only a few hours yesterday.

I've done this to my first gen 360 as well. It lasted for about 20 hours of play, then bit the dust again. After repairing it 6 times I gave up on it. You just can't permanently repair these things... they have faulty solder joints under the gpu and cpu.

Yeah I did the same until the video chip bit the dust. So I waited till the new xbox came out and bought that one. No problems since.

I know, the GPU gets too damn hot and the lead free solder isn't as good as the old stuff.

I even did the fan mod to up them from 5v to 12v. sounds like a jet engine and is cool as heck. the thing STILL died.

anyways, bought a newer falcon chipset one last year and it's flawless.

I repaired about 50 of them before giving up, all but one came back within 2 months. FUn while it lasted, and I did all the mods, fan speed regulator bypass, etc. Don't kid yourselves, the Elite model with the 1.5X bigger heatsink on the GPU does the RRoD as well, just not as often.

I didn't do as many as you did Curt but I've done ~15. I tried a myriad of different fixes beyond the basic reflow. That damn board just flexes too damn much to do anything with! If the box could be flooded with nitrogen or CO2 it might just last a bit longer.

I was surprised to learn that PS3's suffer quite a few heat related failures too but that they failed more often from craptastically designed DVD lasers. Not anywhere near the numbers of the 360 but by itself still quite a few compared to other mainstream consumer electronic products.

It is actually remarkable when you think about it, they have been making zillions of PC motherboards for years without any serious problems (crappy caps excepted) and the 360 is just a complete reliability disaster.
