I just finished programming my cnmsx-pro and everything is working great. However, I'd like to power on the htpc as well. My only thought was to wire one of the relays to the power switch of the htpc. Once the relay closes, it'll power on. close it again and the htpc will send a "power off" request to windows.

Would this work?

Or any other ideas?

I haven't investigated the WOL feature. I never thought the crestron could do that, at least I'd never heard of that ability. I did find out that the MCE remote I have on the pc has a shutdown button that puts the computer in standby mode. When pressed a second time it'll wake the computer up properly. I could program the crestron to do that. Problem is typical with IR though, if it gets out of sync, it doesn't work right. I'd rather find a fool proof way to do it. Even the relay power switch idea could get out of sync too.

Right now all the functions are performed from the front lcd panel, using simple steppers to startup and shutdown everything. With 3 kids in the house I'm worried about having a touchpanel sit around. I think they'll mess with it. Hell, I know they'll mess with it.

Maybe the best idea is to do nothing about the computer, and just leave it in standby and use a remote command to wake it up if you notice it isn't on.

Yeah, I had the sony 300 cd changer and loved it. Ended up ripping all my cds to hard drive and opted to use Media Portal to play them.

BTW, I checked out the crestron yahoo group and found out that someone else has already made a module to do WOL, you just pass it a mac address and it works! I sent them an email.

Update: WOL doesn't work with the x series crestron processors. After days of trying to get it to work. It simply doesn't allow passing of UDP packets, so no go. Ended up just wiring a relay to the motherboard. It's a hack, but it works.

Sure did, the last note I wrote is still true. No WOL on pro 1 processors, yes WOL on a Pro 2 processor (which I don't have). So, hard wiring the relay to the motherboard worked great. Then you tell windows not to turn off when power is pressed again, so it doesn't turn off on accident. Downside is you just disconnected the power button on the case. However, I'm sure you could rig a Y splitter, so both the crestron AND power buttons are connected, at least to power it on manually. Enjoy!

Could always pickup a used QM-RMC and slave it to the X-series processor via serial and get all 2 series network benefits as cheaply as possible.

cheapest I could find was $350. I could build another htpc for that price!

And you would still have the lack of WOL due to the older hardware in the X-series. As far as your problem with sync, try using the green button, it should start media center or bring it to the front if its minimized. IP or Serial is definitely the way to go though.
