I think experimenting with placement is my best bet. I need to mount the sub at my listening position and then go listen all around the room for the best sound. |
I am not acoustic expert but that seems like you may actually be amplifying any bass that gets back in those corners. Aren't bass corner traps usually triangular shaped with insulation filling the entire space, not just the front?

I posted this reply to a user on AudioKarma and realized I never gave a very good description/review of my eWave Deluxe's. Here it is:

I always thought the RS150's were a bit lacking in high volume HT listening and even music presentation. The tweeter was weak. Then I bought a bigfoot and the new found highs that I was hearing fully complemented the "warm" nature of the 150's. I thought the RSC200 was the best center channel ever (only ever owned 4 different ones). It was great and carried the entire theater.
Fast forward: I turned on the eWave's for the first time to listen to some scenes from Madagascar (have a 2yr old). The VERY first thing I noticed...I could clearly hear the blades of grass bending over when the zebra was walking forward...I could hear the exhale of the actors as they said their lines....I never had that before! My projector is an ancient giant (NEC CRT Projector) and it is VERY noisy. I was able to bridge my Behringer A500's for each of the front three and give them some nice power and they will not give up no matter how loud you push them...(at least not in my threshold of pain!).
The mid-upper bass is hard for me to comment on. I have never really liked pushing anything over 80-100hz to the mains just based on how I was raised setting up HT's...it just doesn't sound right to me. That being said...I ran the eWave's for about 2 months without a sub (or surrounds for that matter) and I thought they held up just fine for full range duty...although they are NOT designed to be run full range (designed to rolloff at 80 Hz in my enclosure size).
I have never heard RS850's but I can't see how there is a snowballs chance in hell that those could keep up to the Eminance driver in a properly sized and ported cabinet.
Disclaimer: I may be a bit bias in my impressions...disgust with AV123 made me pretty eager to try something new and since they are the fruit of my labor it is possible that my mind is masking some flaws...but my wife noticed some immediate differences as well. I have two more compression drivers and am contemplating building some crazy surround speakers based on an eWave with slanted cabinets for wall mounting...let's see if anyone on teh forum can help with the crossovers!

As you can imagine the user was asking what I thought the eWave's would sound like compared to the RS850's from AV123...these are just MY opinions! 
Don't bag on me for my description of the projector! It is how I have to describe it to people who have NO IDEA what one is!

See http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html#fiberglass%20traps -- that's what mine are. Except mine are 4" of 703 instead of 2" of 705, and mine are a lot larger than the 24" wide panel he shows.

Cool thanks. Learned something. I was thinking bass traps were supposed to look more like what people build over at AVS with lots of triangles of OC703 to fill the entire area. I suppose the bouncing waves behind will get absorbed that way too.

I completely forgot about this until I was uploading a bunch of pictures to Flickr today and ran across it...my wife is the best!
On top of the 'projector' it says "Greg's CRT Projector"...man how many questions that generated isn't even funny!

That's awesome, Greg! What was that, your 30th birthday? Very cool!
Luckily, I have an awesome wife that loves home theater almost as much as I do! She gets pissed at me when I play games and she can't watch a movie, not when I have it turned up too loud.
Just a month or so ago I told her, "Hey, when I got done with a few projects around the house and get some of this freelance work off my plate, I'm doing some upgrading... I'm building a couple of new subs for the theater." She said, "Oh, OK honey... That sounds cool."

Not 30 yet you old buggers!
Might reveal a bit about the celebration but that is what they call my "groom's cake".
It is the opposite of a wedding cake....the cake for the groom (obviously).
I need to upload some pictures because we have family up this weekend for a few events and a trip to Chicago next week.
Got a few countertops put in...vacuumed the whole thing...tidied up some corners...and finally...after 3 years...
POPPED THE CHERRY ON THE POPCORN POPPER!!!
OMG! It tasted soooooo goood!
The Mega-Pop was expired by 3 years too and it was great! Those pre-measured packets are amazing!
Just got done watching Blind Side (awesome movie BTW) and time to get to sleep.

Greg, the acoustic material used on the wall behind the screen wall (I don't have the proper vocabulary, here) ... where did you get it and what did you pay for it? Source? Also, what AT screen did you go with? SmX, Seymour, ...?

FWIW I did a quick "put the sub in the listening spot" experiment the other night. I didn't really notice that much difference when I listened in different areas of the room, but it was a bit louder in the rear-right corner, which is right off the end of the couch. I moved it there and I'm able to turn it up a bit louder without as much boominess. If I crank it I can even start to "feel" explosions like you should with a proper sub!! It's not a THT but it's an improvement!
Funny thing is, for a while I had TWO subs, the Klipsch 12" and a cheezy Onkyo 10", and I put the Onkyo in that spot. And it didn't seem to help much at all. But the 12" seems to work better there.

Thinking about trying a bed from them! You want to make your purchase amount at least $75 because you will get free shipping I believe.
They send it all vacuum packed and for some reason I get a kick out of opening it up and letting it grow...just a little kid inside I guess.
For the screen I went with the Seymour AV screen...mostly for the price and the local pride factor. I screwed it up though and took it out of the cardboard tube before I was ready to use and then stepped on it...now I have a wrinkle in the center of the screen ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE SCREEN!
You can't see it when an image is projected on it but if I have lighting shining down on the screen in the front or from behind it amplifies the wrinkles.
I emailed Seymour about it and they cautioned against an iron due to its plasticy nature but suggested a steamer (I don't have one).
I figured I will put up with until I can't anymore and then take it apart and re-pull and staple it to see if that helps. It is pretty tight as it is right now though.

Pulled the trigger on a new receiver. Should be getting it later this week.
It was a Bday present to myself.
I know pretty much everyone here has been telling me to keep the Behringer amps, but once I get the new receiver I will be doing some A/B comparisons and if I can't tell the difference I will likely be clearing out the 3 amps I have to simplify the rack some more (at least temporarily!).
Price was just too good to pass up!

Got a kick out of this...
Probably won't get around to setting it up for a bit.
Man...after going downstairs and seeing the theater in disarray and how many outstanding things I have to get it wrapped up I got a bit depressed tonight.
I need to think of a creative way to do my audio rack...I suppose I will end up just building a basic shelf system but that seems like giving up...I don't know why...I had something in my head but I can't make it out on paper.
I did test it out and it works fine...need to get a few other loose ends wrapped up and it should be a simpler setup and easier to use as well.

It's nothing special, I just wanted to make up my mind before posting about it...plus it is fun to tease with pictures.
It is interesting that my last receiver lasted 8 years...and I don't anticipate to keep this one for more than 4 or 5 years.
I guess it is the nature of this hobby...
