I'm looking to buy a netbook in the next couple of weeks. Which one has powerful enough video to play 720p video? I have a 720p cam corder I'll be using it with.

Try and get one with the ION integrated video. It will be more expensive, but I have heard too many horror stories about 1080p youtube and the Intel N270 with integrated intel graphics (3150 etc.).

Personally...depending on the use...a nice 14" or 12" regular notebook will offer more value and maybe better overall experience at the price of a bit of portability and batter life.

Personally I don't have direct experience but have been reading about the ION grfx for awhile.

If I was going to by I would probably weigh the items in this order:

Battery Life
Dual Core CPU
Grfx Chip
Screen Size
HDD Size
HDD Type
Overall Weight
OS
Touch Capabilities

Thanks, I don't care about battery life. It will probably never be unplugged from the wall or car.
Screen size is the most important to me. Small small small. I want something I can stick in my pocket. Touch screen is 90% a must but I'll take video speed over touchscreen.

I need the smallest one available with the fastest graphics. 12-14 inch are wayy wayy too big.

I agree on the dual core. That's preferable but a single core with video acceleration would be OK too.

Looks like it's single core or nothing if I wan 10" or under. The only one with dual core and ION is a 12" Lenovo. Too big.

I have an HP dv2-1132ax dual core athlon neo with 512MB ATI Radeon 3410 discrete graphics card. Little too big for your pocket at 12.1 inches but I lug it everywhere. If you want something smaller and more powerful, Check out the 11.6 inch Alienware M11x, core 2 duo, nvidia gt335M graphics, backlit keyboard damnation what a sweet lil system. If funds are no object, like the last two I described, there is an 8 inch netbook from Sony called the VAIO P that you might like.

If a touchscreen is a must, wait just a little bit for the spate of tablet PC's coming out this summer. Dell has an interesting one that is supposed to come out in several sizes including a 5 inch tablet. Personally right now for touch I'd go for the HP TM2 Touchsmart tablet pc sulv intel dual core with discrete ATI Radeon 4550 graphics? Yummm.

Sadly, there just doesn't seem to be a big batch of ION enabled dual core atom netbooks out yet although the are coming

Because it's an apple and I want a real keyboard.

Don't you get it? Strip a device way down and then convince your customers that they don't need those features.

Then...once they are hooked..you sell all the add-ons at your exclusive retail location for 150% markup!

Seriously though...what else are you using it for? Are you just using it as a web surfer and remote HDD for uploading 720p footage?

I need to take it on vacation, my camcorder does 720p via HD-SD card. I need somewhere to off load that. I'd like to surf the net and use the VGA output for streaming video.

I have a Fujitsu or 2 but they are too old to fit the bill

My recommendation is to just spend $100 and get three more 16gb SD cards.

That should last 3 weeks of vacation at least.

But on the other hand...I would hate to get back and find out one of the cards crapped out on you.

I rarely offload footage while on the trip. I usually just take enough memory card to last the entire time.

Just my opinion.

I usually take enough Hi8 tape to last the entire trip. Mr. Green I'll have the Hi8 with me too. It's just the Sanyo water proof is replacing my now dead 16 year old Hitachi Hi8 water proof camera.

I can't find 16gb cards that cheap here 8gb card here is $30 bucks. and I'd rather know I have two copies of the video and I "got it" than finding out one crapped out as you say.

You will probably leave it in the hotel room, right?

Just get a cheap small screened laptop. Much better storage, performance, value.

Do it! Razz

No hotels. I won't leave it behind. I'm an equipment geek remember? I'm still looking for a Sony 1252 or similar to take with me too. Very Happy
