Hello all I am trying to setup a 3d rear projection theater. I have two marquee projectors. I am looking for a mount for the polarisers or specs on how to make one any help would be greatly appreciated I will be driving the projectors via pc and already have the software.

I also am looking for any information on diy screens for 3d rear projection. any info would be greatly appreciated.
The screen size would be small about 100 inch 16x9 with 2 9500lc projectors.

Thanks for all your help

Hmmm... I'd be surprised if passive 3d is even possible with RP... Confused Question

Hmm... OK, I'm gonna have to do some reading, because I have no idea what the hell the "open/closed ratio" is...

Stewart site wrote:
TechScreen 150 excellent for use in 3D applications and preserves polarized stereoscopic images, via a high open/closed ratio.

Interesting.

I think the polarizing filters are going to be the easy part.

I'm working on the same thing, with front projection.

For polarizing filters and matching glasses, check here:

www.berezin.com
www.polarization.com

There's the choice of linear or circular polarization.
I've noticed in the 3D gaming forums, there are proponents of both.

About the rear projection material- the ready-made material is pricey, and I'm not sure that there is a home-made alternative.
Any way you could do front projection? There are at least two paint-on products rated for nondepolarizing applications. I can't use these, as the front speakers are behind the screen.

A link to 3d screen fabric comparisons:

Are you using the IZ3D driver?

Keep us posted!
Thanks, Mark

yest i am using the iz3d driver the bigest problem i am running into is how to mount the polarizer. have you ever seen any of the premade rp 3d screen matierial??? if i could see chunk of it i could probably make it with out any really big problem dalite has a rp fabric that is supposed to be 100% non depolarizing I mean really how many fabrics could it be

I would ask a screen dealer for a product sample. This is common enough request, you can usually get a 6" square for very little cost.

A google search for "DaLite Screens" brings up many on-line dealers. I'd check with one of the bigger dealers first. B&H Photo has been around for a long while and might be a good starting point.

The only RP material I have dealt with personally is the plastic stuff used in standard rear projection CRT sets. The material rated for nondepolarizing applications is sure to be very different.

Thanks, Mark

The set of commercial CRT-specific polarizers I saw here a few years ago just looked like a set of lens caps... A ring with the center cut out, and the filter material attached. It's not rocket science - you could easily hand-make something. From coffee can lids, to an ugly cardboard band, to a nicer plastic band, all the way to having a bezel cut out of lexan or something.

that would be good but i would have to circular polarizers if i did not i woudl have trouble aligning all three to the same angle. can we say multi color ghosting.
but that is a good idea though.

I have been doing some research the dalite 3d virtual black is rating very high as a rear projection screen material and it is just translucent black vinyl that should be easy to find I will let you know how it works once i get a smoke shower curtain
or maybe a large sheet of glass with gray window tint Twisted Evil since it would be esentially the same thing and look great as a tv like screen

No big deal. Put the lenses on the projector, put the glasses on, level your head, and twist the polarizers until they're each the brightest/darkest in their respective eyes. Again - it isn't rocket science.

I couldn't find much of anything on the whole "open/closed ratio" thing mentioned in the Stewart documentation. The only couple of references I could find that referred to the term was relating to the sintering process - heating a powder to melt it into a solid - and it referred the resulting porosity of the material. I assume that's what Stewart is referring to - porosity. I think the porosity in the material is what creates the diffusion. If there was no porosity, it would be transparent - like a piece of glass. I don't know, though... I'm just guessing.

The Da-lite material sounds interesting... But, I assume the "smoked" is more for digitals with poor black levels... I think with CRT, you could go to a non-tinted. I think with the polarizing filters and glasses, you're going to want to keep all the light output you can get.

I'd have to agree with you there SC, think of a polarizer on a camera lens. You loose what? 2 f/stops? That's substantial.

very true that is why circular polarized would be better the extinction rates anre not as high and the slightly darker material would help counteract ghosting.

I will be doing a smaller screen than anticipated only 80" wide that should be nice and bright with a 9500lc for each eye.
