|
|
Hi folks,
I'm looking for a good screen to mate with my "new" (to me) Sony 1270. I currently have a high gain grey screen that I was using with my old LCD projector, and from my understanding it isn't going to work well at all with a CRT. Can anyone recommend a good match for the 1270? I know its not a high end projector and money would be better spent on other upgrades, but I would like to get the best 'bang for the buck' with this great projector. So, I am willing to spend a little to get the best out of it. Maybe some of you guys, who are running something similar can recommend?

Do you want a fixed screen or a rollup? You can make a fixed screen from white vinyl wall covering material that works well for a very low cost. I made a screen from Parkland Plastics material from home depot with a 1x4 wooden frame for less than 50 bucks. I have a new rollup you can buy for 60 bucks plus shipping.

jkruger,
You have got to be the coolest guy around, man. It must be a blessing for your family and friends to have you around. I still have your last PM, is it okay to give you a ring?
Anyhow, yea I should have stated that I am looking for a pull down. It's going to go in front of the normal viewing tv (flat screen) so a fixed screen is not going to work in my application (I have thought about this over and over). I've been looking at some of what da lite offers and some of the draper stuff, and my next question is. Is it really worth the effort to spend the extra money for a better screen? The reason I don't mind spending a bit more, is because I do plan to upgrade sooner or later, and it saves me the extra time and money to have to upgrade the screen too.

You could drive down here and get the 1271 and the screen at the same time.

I also have a 1270 and will build my own screen. What size would be the best ? , I am not that familiar with the differnt formats but would like to make the screen universal. I am just starting to play with this machine and do you have to adjust the screen picture to fit your screen when playing differnt formats ?

Welcome to the forum, alphalenny!!!
Since most modern DVDs and Blu-ray discs are are formatted for 16x9, then unless you're working with an HTPC and specific software or a hardware scaler, then a 16x9 screen makes the most sense for most people.
The actual size of the screen kind of depends on your room size (number of viewers) and viewing angle (how close you're going to sit), and light control (full or partial), but the maximum I'd go with a 1270 is about 96x54... But, the smaller you go, the sharper, brighter and punchier the image will be. Unless you're trying to accomplish some specific goal you haven't told us about, I'd probably go for a 48x85 (16:9) WilsonArt Designer White laminate screen.
As for playing different formats, if you use any modern DVD or Blu-ray player, it will handle the formatting for you. 16:9 (1.78:1) material will play full screen, 1.85 and 2.40 (scope) material will play with small and large (respectively) black bars at top and bottom (letterboxed), and 4:3 material will play with black bars on the sides (pillarboxed).

alphalenny,
you just got some great advice from SC, so if you follow it you should be in great shape.
LDV33,

Lots of people use pulldowns, because they have no other choice. The reason being that there will always be some amount of rippling and waviness, which you just can't get rid of. It will be visible while watching movies, to varying degrees. How much it bothers you though will be very depenednt on the specific viewers ability to tolerate.
The only (non-tensioned) pulldowns that I'm aware of that you won't see waviness variations on are the HighPower screens. The ripples are usually still there... you just can't see them due to the nature of the retroreflective material.

What about creating a lightweight fixed screen, then either lifting it out of the way (hooked to the ceiling) when not in use. Or taking it off some ceiling hooks and storing it elsewhere when not in use?

I almost forgot about this thread.
I was able to get a hold of really nice Optoma 100" screen that's been working very nicely. The guy I bought it from never got the chance to install it and didn't even get to open it. I've been happy with it so far, but wanted to go the 16:9 route. So, I was able to rearrange the room around to accomodate a fixed screen (the Altec's take up so much room!!!) and yesterday I ordered a 58 x 100 sheet of Wilsonart laminate. It's supposed to be here by Friday. I'm hoping for a nice improvement over the Optoma " gain of 1.0 ". I was told that this is more like .8 than 1.0 I'll verify this, after I get it all setup and installed.
