We just installed a rather extensive crestron controll system in our Board room and when the programmer was her, he gave me a copy of all the crestron software as well as an old creston cresnet IIms box. I have the software installed on a test workstation and I think I am talking to the box but when I run the toolbox program I am not seeing the same display as I have seen on his computer when talking to our new system. Anybody have a suggestionas to hwhat or where I should start in trying to learn how to program the crestron stuff?

Follow jmayes' instructions in this thread. It's all you need to know to get up and running.

I don't find the IIms listed in the datya base of crestnet devices. I know this a older product. I have look all over this box but I don't see and other product models other then the cresnet IIMS and media control system listed on the front of the box. Any suggestion as to which device I should be using?

PM jmayes - he might be able to help you. I sold him a box probably of similar vintage to what you're talking about. Even though he's working with the newer stuff, he might have played with an older box and probably has the correct (older) software to program it.

Here's the thread with photos of the pieces I sent him:

Save the jokes about my carpet. Wink

Could be why you got it for free. Very Happy

Or consider getting another controller. A CNMSX controller like I'm using can be gotten off the 'bay for < $100. Either way, follow jmayes' advice if you contact him. I've swapped e-mails with him and he is as knowledgeable a person as you could hope to come across.

This is a day late and a dollar short, but that box is so old you need Cresnet Toolbox (DOS) - PM if you need help.

Yes, don't bother with the IIms. buy a cnmsx-pro off ebay instead. the amount of time you'll save in pulling your hair out trying to program old stuff is way worth the sub $100 price.

I myself have been watching the prices on ebay and finally found a cnmsx-pro for a good price and a 1550C touch panel. A friend of a friend who said he would be able to hook me up with the software is now back pedaling or just unable to get it. I am hoping someone in the forum who has been in my situation will feel some sympathy and maybe point me in the right direction or possibly a loaner. Trying to do a little DIY, I have followed 'jmayes' tutorial and feel I know it backwards as I have read it multiple times while waiting to get the controller. For those in the Business, I am just intrigued with the setup and have dabbled in different computer based HA setups and would very much like to see if I can get this working from purely an individual stand point, not trying to take 'Food from anyones mouth'.

Thanks

Neither of the IIMS nor the X-series processors will show much in toolbox, they are considered legacy devices and will only show the device name and firmware.

I am a long time crestron programmer so if you guys have questions I will try to help, but you will have to forgive me for not releasing copyrighted software that is only supposed to be licensed to dealers or CAIPs.

And the program that interfaces to those devices is Viewport.

Yeah, I have the software as well, but can't part with it. I can only use it for service work.

The best way to get around this would be to have someone do the programming for you. For anything you'll want done, it should be a quick and fast setup. And should be a very reasonable cost.

Mike is right, I can easily bang out most "theater room" systems in a few hours all depending on the number of sources and how many of them I already have or can find the drivers/ir codes for without having to capture via the learner.

You guys are funny... Most of you won't give a second thought to saving yourself some bucks by buying and installing the OEM version of Windows - a version that's specifically licensed to Microsoft System Builders to be resold with new hardware - or worse yet, buying or trading totally illegitimate pirated versions of Windows or other software... I get it, though... The Crestron stuff is your business...

Thepainter, try PM'ing jmayes. Last I knew, he had all the software to program the older Crestron hardware.

Wow nice assumption there, I guess I should risk a good portion of my livelihood to send someone I have never met or even spoken too a program which could get my dealership revoked. The reason why crestron stopped allowing just anyone to download the software is because too many people decided they were going to be crestron programmers and charging people for programming and not being able to deliver functioning systems much less a properly working and correctly programmed system. Is crestron programming so hard? Not really but there are many little things which can easily make a simple system turn into a huge source of frustration.

Guess thats what I get for trying to help a fellow CRT member, and BTW an Action Pack or TechNet subscription is a cheap way to have fully valid licenses for most microsoft programs, but I would think you would already know that.

The software I have does not belong to me, nor did I purchase it on top of the table or beneath it. It along with other software was giving to me to use specifically as a support tool for service, maintenance and support of specific customers ONLY.

It's commonly known and understood that this software should not be loaned, shared or distributed to anyone. I can't even leave it with the customer that it supports.

Some of this software is sold to the customer and they pay a licencing fee. Once they pay that fee, the software belongs to them. However, as the servicer, I still have access to it to use for their purpose only. And because of the complexities in who all owns what and what government or otherwise agency had signed a purchasing agreement to also protect the software and why it should be protected, I'd rather honor what I was asked and not share or otherwise release this software outside of my PC for use other than what it was giving to me for.

Sharing windows and other software that is commercially available is a lot different than sharing, selling or making available to others software that you personally agreed to protect and not share, that could also be a part of an larger agreement with some agency.

It is all in a bundle of PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE...

Thanks ecrabb but I might just hold off on that as I wouldn't want to get jmayes in 'Hot Water' as I am sure there are many people watching this forum who might take offense to him supplying the software. I can see the other point but I am strictly a DIY and wouldn't be looking to circumvent Crestron by programming on the side or anything like that. Most people in the forum that I read about programming were doing it mainly for themself....... I'm ranting, sorry.

I just moved back from the Palm Beach area after 12 years and know quite a few people in your area who would be able to help you directly if needed on your system. Lots of people not working down there who would be cheap to get as well.

I feel your pain, I actually started into the AV industry from DIY after being in IT for many years and the software company I worked got bought and moved out of country. If you ever want a second set of eyes feel free to archive your program and send it over to me.
