The purpose of this thread is to communicate Pioneer RPTV information that has been requested of me via several private messages in a single place, for everyone to see. Because my time is limited I would like this to be a gradual, ongoing process, and for anyone to participate.

Models covered: Pioneer SD-5X2/643/533HD5, Elite PRO-X10HD/X20HD/X30HD

For now I will assume you know how to get into the service menu. This is for experienced users only.

Pioneer source/signal nomenclature:
    15K = 480i component
    31K = 480p
    45K = 720p
    33K = 1080i

PART 1 -- GEOMETRY

1.1 -- SIZE Mode

    Put the TV in 1ST FACTORY mode. The remaining buttons are all on the remote.

    Go into SIZE mode by pressing the ANT button. Screen will go green. The following buttons on the remote can be used (some are not available for certain models)

    '1' ... H Size 15K
    '2' ... V Size
    '3' ... H Phase 15K
    '6' ... H Size 33K (HD)
    '7' ... V Size HD (PRO-X30 only)
    '9' ... H Phase 31K RGB (the so-called VGA port!)
    '0' ... H Phase 33K RGB
    'CH+' ... H Phase 31K
    'CH-' ... H Phase 33K

    Adjust the values using VOL+/-

Notes: H = horizontal, V = vertical, Phase = position

Other geometry adjustments that can't be made here are made in COARSE mode, which I will cover in my next post.[/i]

dangit... why is there no V Phase? That's what I need more than anything!

Btw, for those that have never messed with the service menu before (like myself), be prepared to spend some quality time with your convergence after messing with the size settings. Your old convergence settings go out the window.

A wise man once told me. WRITE ALL SETTING DOWN BEFORE MAKING CHANGES

That's just in case you get in over your head and need to put it all back to stock.

There's really no V phase? Weird.

Actually, after tweaking with the size settings, I ended up putting everything back to where it was originally (I did write them all down). It still messed up convergence.

Yeah, no V phase. I think I can tweak it a bit in the convergence menus of the sm, but haven't worked up the courage to explore that area yet.

I once did a 4 hour 198 point convergence on my 42" RCA. I got it dialed in tight. Then I forgot to togle "save" before I exited. Buh bye convergence settings. That's what I get for starting a convergence at 11pm. Laughing

I noticed that too. There is an adjustment in the user menu but not for HD or FULL mode, only for ZOOM/letterbox modes which is pretty useless if you're using an HD source like the Fury!

Part 1.2 -- COARSE CONVERGENCE

After performing adjustments under part 1.1 (SIZE MODE) you will need to tidy things up using coarse convergence mode 3.

In this mode it is important to make your adjustments a little bit at a time, check all the colors and save your work often. Spending too much time here could not only cause screen burn-in but also burn out your eyes!

NB: When you enter this mode the user menu settings are reset, so any work done there on your multi-point convergence gets wiped-out.

The following remote buttons are used throughout the procedure, at any time in this mode:

    'SCREEN' / 'MODE' .. cycles thru all the SD & HD modes your TV supports (F = Full, Z = Zoom, C = Cinema Wide, N = Natural Wide, H = HD)
    'CH+' / 'CH-' .. cycles thru colors R, B, G, R (PRO-x10, SD-5x2)
    .. colors & direction GH, GV, RH, RV, BH, BV (PRO-x20/x30, SD-533/643)
    'SEARCH' .. toggle red CRT on/off (all except PRO-x30)
    'FREEZE' .. toggle blue CRT on/off (all except PRO-x30)
    'SELECT' .. toggle green CRT on/off (all except PRO-x30)
    RED .. toggle red CRT on/off (PRO-x30)
    BLUE .. toggle blue CRT on/off (PRO-x30)
    GREEN .. toggle green CRT on/off (PRO-x30)
    'DISPLAY' .. turn off all CRTs (to give it a rest)
    YELLOW .. toggles between internal test pattern and INPUT 1 without exiting

Procedure:
    1) 1ST FACTORY ADJ
    2A) Press 'INPUT4' to enter COARSE CONVERGENCE (PRO-x30, SD-533/643)
    2B) Press the '.' key (below '7') to enter COARSE CONVERGENCE (all except SD-533/643)
    2C) Press 'INPUT1' to allow viewing external signal (optional)
    3) Press the '.' or 'INPUT4' two more times to get into mode 3 (never mess with the tables of data in modes 1&2, go directly to mode 3 every time!)
    4) Select the screen mode you want as described above.
    5) Select the colors/direction as described above.
    6) Turn off the colors you do not wish to see by toggling the CRTs as described above (optional - but it is recommended to work on green first, then make the red match it if possible, and then the blue).
    7) Select the parameter to adjust by pressing the following buttons:

    '0' .. STATIC: overall screen position (the default you will see upon entry to mode 3)
    '1' .. SKEW: horizontal skew (teeter-totter)
    '4' .. KEY: keystone (cone shape)
    '5' .. SUBPIN: pincushion (PRO-x30 only)
    '6' .. PIN: horizontal pincushion (asymetric)
    '7' .. LIN: linearity (rectangle size evenness)
    '8' .. SIZE: zoom (rectangle size)
    Note: availability of the above parameters depends on the adjustment color/direction and model of TV.

    8) As usual, adjust the paramters (after writing them down) using the 'VOL+/-' keys.

    9) Repeat steps 5-8.

    10) Go back to step 4 and repeat until you've done all the modes you intend to use.

    11) Exit by pressing the hidden service menu button.

Now that I posted the COARSE CONVERGENCE instructions I remembered there is a way to adjust vertical position on the newer sets (533/643, Elite x30):

Using STATIC parameters GV, RV, BV you can move the grids up/down. Do this first.

Next use SIZE to adjust overscan (5% is a good target). On our sets it is not possible to get 5% in HD mode and a perfectly square grid. Then use the other parameters to fix as much distortions as possible.

Finally do the fine convergence...

1.3 -- FINE CONVERGENCE

Once in coarse convergence mode, press the 'SET' / 'ENTER' button.

This is similar to the user menu MULTI-POINT convergence grid you are all used to, except you have the added benefits of being able to turn off the individual CRTs and move the green. Thumbs Up

Any helpful hints for pincushion and linearity? Thanks in advance if you do!
