I'm still running my 8 year old Parkland Plastics Screen...Are you familiar with that material?...If so how does it compare to DW would it be a worthwhile upgrade?
There was a huge screen-testing thread over on the A site a while back with a lot of incredibly useful data. Unfortunately wbassett, the main tester, hosted his results on photobucket and now they're all gone. You might check with wbassett and see if he has data for Parkland.

Oddly enough, that sounds much like the material I used to fill in the window opening behind my screen. It was about 1" thick foam with a foil film on one side. Did a great job of blacking out the window area and now the sun doesn't bake the screen wall. Cooled off the room considerably. I can see how that would have made a good backing to the DW material but I guess I was just looking to make a change. _________________ "Coffee is for Closers."

Doh! I wish you would have checked in here before you purchased that material... That's blackout cloth that the seller is selling at about a 100% markup. If you wanted to try a BOC screen, I would have told you to go to SoFro or JoAnn to pick up the same thing for about half the price. Sorry, man!
IIRC, BOC is somewhere between 1.0 and 1.1 gain. My old man uses it with his LCD, and I think it looks pretty nice. Not as much pop as the WilsonArt, but it's better than a wall or whatever. I hate painting, so I'd probably have BOC if I didn't have WilsonArt.

Have you guys tried calling Lowe's or Home Depot? It'll be a special order, but they should be able to get it, and it should be MUCH cheaper than through a distributor (who usually sells at wholesale to commercial customers, but who is boning you because you're a "walk-in" retail type customer).

The generic term is "drapery lining", and any good fabric store should carry several different brands and sizes. You just have to go in the store and look at the different varieties and find the brightest/whitest. I think you'll be amazed at how cheap it is. Depending on the roll size, you may be able to get enough for a screen for <$20.

Yes, and it was special order, wait 2-3 weeks, and was $265 from Lowes. So I ordered it today 10-09 and will have it tuesday 10-13. It was cheaper, faster, and a small outfit gets my money... Way to go small business guy
I could have Signed up with Wilsonart to get it at volume discount, but then I would have to promise them a minimum order every year and I already deal with Formica... sooooo, nah. It would be a real hassle for just one piece at whatever the discount would have been, they of course wouldn't tell me because I am not a dealer.

These prices are where I have to take a deep breath. Some people have been paying upwards of $300-$400 for a complete Wilsonart screen. To me, that is insane. You can get some good screen material for cheaper than that.

I agree with you Spanky, If I didn't have all of the other material laying around for the frame I'm sure my 58"x104" screen would be very close to $300.
The DW was $150 [actually less, I did get a contractor break] roll of 3" Velvet Gaffers tape $36
Material to build frame, Stuff I had Laying around,
Door jambs with weather stripping for the sides , 36 ft of 1x4's, Piece of old paneling, 20 ft colonial base board, Brick moulding for hanging blocks. Screws, glue, and of course I have the tools so...
Most of the name brands, Da-lite, Draper,etc. were nearly $600 in the size I built so I'll give DW a try. If nothing else I'll have the frame ready for some good material later. What good commercial screen are you talking about that's cheaper than $300, Spanky?
The commercial screens are almost all significantly more money, and most of the lower-end Draper and Da-Lite matte screens are closer to 1.1 gain, not the 1.3 that WilsonArt can potentially give you. You have to go to a higher-gain screen like the Video Spectra (1.5 gain), and deal with the smaller viewing cone and hot-spotting, which may or may not be acceptable depending on your room and projector mount.
I'm amazed at the variability of the prices of what seem like commodity materials. Yes, I've heard of people paying $65 for a sheet of DW, but I suspect that was for vertical grade. I paid around $140 or so with tax for my sheet from a wholesale supplier, which I thought was a good deal and seems fairly close to other prices in the $120-150 ballpark I mostly see from people posting about it. Given that, I can't comprehend how Lowe's could possibly be selling a sheet for $265 that everybody else can sell for half that. It makes no sense and I wonder if the pricing was just flat out wrong.
I can't say for sure, but I think when I bought my sheet for $140 or so, I did it knowing it was $20 or so HIGHER than Lowe's because Lowe's had to special order it and the wholesale supplier had it in stock. But, now it's apparently double. WTF?

I am still using a BO screen because this is what I ran into... My remodeling customers almost always go with some kind of Granite or fake Granite so I very rarely have a need for laminates...
I buy a bunch of stuff from ISC surfaces.. http://www.iscsurfaces.com/ Formerly Case Supply. and on tile materials they give me a pretty decent deal.. But on the laminate my idea of volume and theirs is totally different. This is the company at least around here that supplies much of Home depots tile and laminate material...
I was trying for a while to get them down low enough to where I could make the stuff available at a reasonable price to forum memebers... but it just didn't get that low...
If somebody really can't find the stuff... I could help.. but by the time shipping is figured it ain't that big of a price difference than what others have discovered around here..
