What new pre-pro did you get I didn't see?? Do tell..or at least show me the thread where you told about it. |
Sweet, I'd like to hear that bad boy.
Haven't really made a deal of it. I've been wanting something to do advanced audio all year. I kept looking at the Onkyo 875 because it had HQV Reon-VX scaling, and could upconvert component to HDMI... which would MASSIVELY simplify my signal path and switching operation. There was also the Integra 9.8, which had the same guts as the Onkyo 875, but is a prepro, has the Integra warrranty and higher-quality look/feel. I did a ridiculous amount of reading and research, and found out there were some issues with the 875/9.8.
Then the new Onkyo/Integra stuff came out at CEDIA last month. The new 876/9.9 had a few new features I liked, some of the issues were supposedly resolved, and it has a new ISFccc color calibration system where you can tweak brightness, contrast, and gamma for each color. Nothing like low-level gamma for CRT, but it still sounded pretty neat. I was leaning toward the Onkyo 876, but I went and looked at a local dealer here, and it just had a bit of a plasticy feel. Then I went and looked at the Integra, and it was really, really nice.
It was a chunk of change, but I'll probably have it for 3-4 years. My Marantz AVR barely lasted me 2, and I'm already upgrading. Of course, the TCO on the refurb Marantz was very low - probably close to $100/year. The Integra won't be that cheap, but it should last me a lot longer.
Is that a Belkin PF40 or PF60? How do you like it? I was looking at those the past few days.

So you got an Integra 9.9? Damn. I can't wait to see that. (oh yeah, I am planning on heading over there in a few weeks! will get details later once travel plans are finalized).
Yes, it is a PF60. I think I got it on some sort of good deal (buy.com maybe?) but I can't remember anymore. It works well to trigger my amps to come on with some switched outlets. Not to hot on the silver color but the door covers the rack so no biggie.

Sorry, Greg - I missed your reply! It's official? You're coming to the meet? Awesome!!! Are you bringing your wife or flying solo? I'll PM you my email address so I can send you directions. I'll be sending everybody an email next weekend.
I think I'll pick up one of those PF60's in the spring before stormy season - they look really, really nice for the money. I found a photo or two of the internals and they look really well built, too. Looking around, it seems like there were some smokin' deals on them last spring and earlier, but now they're all just under $250. Funny, because it's a $600 retail piece of equipment. Talk about a markup!!!
Cheers,
SC

Had a bunch of my wife's coworkers and husbands over last night and had a good time. Ended up in the theater for about three hours. I was surprised that we were able to hang out in there and talk, about 8 of us, even with the risers. I always thought the room wouldn't support that type of gathering, but it did awesome.
We left the lights on but dimmed a little and had a few music BR's playing in the background while everyone sat and chatted.
This is of course after we watched about 15 trailers I had on the PS3 and had several compliments. These people weren't A/V enthusiasts, so take that for what it's worth. A nice guy I met ended up telling me about his Bose lifestyle system. He actually told me that he wasn't that impressed with it once he got it home. I tried not to grin or laugh and just listened.
Anyway, I ended up sprucing up the room a bit for people coming over. Added some wall panels (no acoustic benefits yet, just decoration) and almost finished up the side trim. Just need to paint the door and trim and then get my cabinets/countertop in place.
Sorry for the poor pictures, was in a hurry.

2x15"...I need to work on placement...I am actually getting less dB (perceived) at listening position with both on rather than just one.
I might need some help calibrating two subs.
But that is for another thread.

I had the same issue with 2x10" here. I got rid of one and it made things better. Of course those were 2 different brands and were hard to match together too.

This is just what the doctor ordered.

I realize this isn't my exact room but it will be fun to try and replicate this. Now if I could only get my Behringer UCA202 and REW to play nice with Vista 64.

Only $25! I am a craigslist newbie so I think it is a great deal. Not sure what I want to do with it yet but thinking about making this my audio rack...
Turns out it is a 23" wide...but I am going to see if I can unscrew the rack supports and scoot them closer to each other.
Clean it up, replace the casters, paint it all black and I think it will look pretty slick all loaded up with equipment.
It came with three sliding shelves too...although they are 23" wide so if I modify the rack they will be lost.
Any thoughts?

Ok...only one set of speakers left but all the new parts and pieces are in!
Started putting together the crossovers tonight! This took me about 1-1/2 hour. Took me awhile to figure out my new butane soldering iron...cord free is nice but the fuel burns pretty quick. I am a complete amateur so don't rely on that review as your only source. $12 was the right price and plus...FIRE!
Anyway....here is where I got:
Workbench -
Closeup of one -
Two 50% done -
One about 90% done - (forgot about the L-Pad wire connections so three wire connections left!)
I think another 1-1/2 hour tomorrow night should finish the crossovers. Then I will check them to make sure my bogus soldering skills didn't render them completely useless ( ).
I will probably start the woofer break-in process as well...plus tell my cabinet builder he needs to get to work!

Hey Greg! Those subs are MFW-15's, yes? Did you pick up some B-stocks? How do you like 'em?
I've been so tempted to get an MFW-15 and have been watching the B-stocks for a satin black to match my x-mtm fronts and x-cs center. AV123 is only about 45 miles away so I don't have to ship it. But I'm leery of all the soap-opera shenanigans going down at AV123, and my wife isn't too crazy about the boom from my little 12" Klipsh already...

ALL OF MY AV123 GEAR IS GONE. I felt it was best not to be associated with someone that steals from charities for personal profit. End of story here please.
The MFW's were fine but I am going larger...THT style. More to come soon...build cost is around $400 complete.
Update on speaker crossovers:: turns out I can't read directions and didn't realize that my "deluxe" crossover on the "standard" crossover board isn't able to just use the standard layout.
Picked up a solder wick(worked OK) and de-solder bulb(didn't work for crap) and rearranged one to look like this:

Just finished my "sketchup" model:
Trying to figure out what the finishes will be...behind a screen so not that important. Thinking black painted MDF on sides and back and plywood with oak veneer stained dark on front baffle. Need to figure out how to mount the horn as well...need it to stay flexible for vertical alignment changes but also needs to be stout so it stays strong with all of my new bass! [coming soon]

Items remaining for the front three...
1. Paint main cabinet black (probably roll on a few glossy black coats with a foam roller)
2. Stain front baffle (was thinking dark stain but now seeing the light oak contrast with the black it looks pretty sharp, so I might just put a clear coat on top of this)
3. Install binding posts on top and back for each speaker and L-pad
4. Mount and wire up cross over
5. Test each speaker
6. Build stands to raise tweeter to ear level
7. Adjust horn vertical position to my liking
8. Enjoy!
Man...and I thought I was almost done!
