I've been receiving Curt's newsletter for years, but had to join the forum today just to say how happy I am with the BDP-83. I've had Oppo's original DVD player for over four years, so I knew the company and had been keeping an eye on the BDP-83. A friend of mine was an EAP owner, and he was glowing in his praise, so I could not help myself. I ordered on July 1, and it was in my rack on July 8. All I can say is that this is the player I've been waiting for. It has replaced my old Oppo DVD player, a Denon 2900 DVD/DVD-A/SACD player, AND my first generation Pannie BD player. Just the fact that it replaced three components and cleared up so much space would be good -- the fact that the performance is so outstanding is just icing on an already tasty cake. As a BD player, the Oppo is light years ahead of my Pannie in terms of functionality. I was always frustrated by the fact that my remote could only seem to move the on-screen cursor in one direction, it was slow to load, slow to react -- once the movie was playing I never had any real complaints, but getting to that point was frustrating. The best praise I can heap on the Oppo is that it works like a DVD player -- hit a button and it, you know, works. As a DVD player, the professionals say that it benchmarks as well as anything, and I can't disagree. And then there's the price. The Oppo replaced three components that probably cost me $1500. For $499 plus shipping, with an HDMI cable thrown in. I was an early adopted of both HD-DVD and BD, and the Oppo is the cheapest HD player I've bought, and overall outperforms everything else I own. What's not to like?

I'd be really interested in hearing from somebody who has (or had) a PS3 (or one of the newer, fast BD players) to know how the speed compares to the new Oppo.
I probably won't drop $500 on a player right now since I have a perfectly good working system, but perhaps down the road...

Walter (WTS) has both a PS3 and the Oppo BDP-83. He had this to say:
| WTS wrote: | Well I got my Oppo BR last night and had a chance to watch a few clips from various BR discs comparing them to the PS3. Overall I would say the Oppo is a step or 2 above the PS3. The PS3 just seemed on the soft side and the colours seemed muted compared to the Oppo. Also the Oppo seemed to have more depth to it. That's not to say that the PS3 is bad but it just seemed when going from the Oppo to the PS3 it was like hmmm where did the punch go and then going back to the Oppo was like --Ahhh that's better. I never tryed DVD but I will do that another day.
Of course not a great in depth review but my overall take on the Oppo is I'll be keeping it and selling my PS3 but it does give the PQ that extra kick in the right direction. All the oppo settings were at neutral and I used the 1080p/60 YCpCr444 deep colour settings for the output, as well the PS3 was set for 1080p/60. |
Maybe he'll chime in about the speed issue. Given that he's going to sell the PS3 I'm assuming the speed's pretty good. Reviews all say the speed is nice - it's not up to PS3 speeds for loading because obviously the Oppo is not the super-computer that the PS3 basically is, but that it's fast enough to not leave you wondering what's going on.

Here's the speed results from that review:
| Quote: | Power on:
PS3: 10 seconds
BDP-83: 12 seconds
BD55: 19 seconds
BDP-05: 27 seconds (when tray opens)
Disc insertion to first image:
BDP-83: 27 seconds
PS3: 37 seconds
BD55: 52 seconds
BDP-05: 67 seconds
Pressing Top Menu button to menu screen:
PS3: 9 seconds
BDP-83: 10 seconds
BDP-05: 23 seconds
BD55: 30 seconds |
So overall I'd say the BDP-83 is actually FASTER than the PS3! Wow! While some things are 1-2 seconds slower the big one (disc insertion to first image) is actually 10 seconds *FASTER*. Amazing.

I got that. I probably won't be selling the PS3 soon, because I like and use many other features the PS3 offers, such as streaming music and videos, or the occasional game, web site, or YouTube video.
I can see how, if all you used the PS3 for was BD, it would only make sense to dump the PS3 and get the Oppo.

That would certainly be a killer combination! Is yours the D2v version with the ARC room correction?
Kal |
No, not the D2v2 ... yet! However, I do have ARC and I must say, it does work as advertised. I just do a bit of tweaking once I've uploaded everything to the SSP using an SPL meter. I really don't have a big enough room to have a projector but my TV is a 1080p Pioneer Elite plasma so I'm blessed with pretty awesome audio and video.

Nice! The best part is that if you ever have any issues with the D2 you can practically walk down the road to have it fixed or to talk to someone about it.

Hi,
I had a OPPO DVD player and I was very happy with it, the only problem was that sometimes you had to restart the dvd Player because there came no Sound.
What is the best budget way to get the BDP-83 in Europe/Germany?
The only thing I would like to have as an aditional feature would be the output resolution option 1080p/48hz.

Here's another good review of the Oppo BDP-83: http://www.avguide.com/review/playback-22-oppo-digital-bdp-83-blu-rayuniversal-player?src=Playback
| Quote: | BOTTOM LINE:
"Oppo’s BDP-83 Blu-ray/universal player is more versatile than most other players at any price, and it offers better picture and sound quality than anything I’ve seen or heard at, or even remotely close to, its price. For these reasons, I would argue it represent the biggest bargain going in today’s home theater marketplace. Playback is adopting the Oppo as its Blu-ray reference player." |
Interested? Get it here:

For the Canadians on the forum who are looking to buy the BDP83 and are not aware, there is an authorized reseller in Mississauga, Ontario "OnlyBestRated" that has them in stock. The price fluctuates with the exchange rate but they are presently going for $554.44(Cdn) PLUS shipping OR if you live in or around the GTA, with pre-arrangement, you can avoid the shipping costs and pick it up directly from their warehouse.

That's a little cheeky. In a thread "Help support the forum and buy your Oppo through us" you post "by the Oppo elsewhere".

That's a little cheeky. In a thread "Help support the forum and buy your Oppo through us"
I, myself, have purchased a number of items through Curt Palme. I only mentioned this purchase option because it may be of benefit to a few in the area. Unfortunately, it is easy to criticize if you reside where you don't have to concern yourself with exchange rates, increased shipping charges and the extra duty on purchasing an item from the U.S because it is actually manufactured overseas. You may think it is cheeky but it is reality.
