I've been receiving Curt's newsletter for years, but had to join the forum today just to say how happy I am with the BDP-83. I've had Oppo's original DVD player for over four years, so I knew the company and had been keeping an eye on the BDP-83. A friend of mine was an EAP owner, and he was glowing in his praise, so I could not help myself. I ordered on July 1, and it was in my rack on July 8. All I can say is that this is the player I've been waiting for. It has replaced my old Oppo DVD player, a Denon 2900 DVD/DVD-A/SACD player, AND my first generation Pannie BD player. Just the fact that it replaced three components and cleared up so much space would be good -- the fact that the performance is so outstanding is just icing on an already tasty cake. As a BD player, the Oppo is light years ahead of my Pannie in terms of functionality. I was always frustrated by the fact that my remote could only seem to move the on-screen cursor in one direction, it was slow to load, slow to react -- once the movie was playing I never had any real complaints, but getting to that point was frustrating. The best praise I can heap on the Oppo is that it works like a DVD player -- hit a button and it, you know, works. As a DVD player, the professionals say that it benchmarks as well as anything, and I can't disagree. And then there's the price. The Oppo replaced three components that probably cost me $1500. For $499 plus shipping, with an HDMI cable thrown in. I was an early adopted of both HD-DVD and BD, and the Oppo is the cheapest HD player I've bought, and overall outperforms everything else I own. What's not to like?

I'd be really interested in hearing from somebody who has (or had) a PS3 (or one of the newer, fast BD players) to know how the speed compares to the new Oppo.

I probably won't drop $500 on a player right now since I have a perfectly good working system, but perhaps down the road...

When I got mine from Oppo there was no choice in how it was shipped. My total was actually probably closer to $685 but I just rounded it up.

I got that. I probably won't be selling the PS3 soon, because I like and use many other features the PS3 offers, such as streaming music and videos, or the occasional game, web site, or YouTube video.

I can see how, if all you used the PS3 for was BD, it would only make sense to dump the PS3 and get the Oppo.

Hi,
I had a OPPO DVD player and I was very happy with it, the only problem was that sometimes you had to restart the dvd Player because there came no Sound.

What is the best budget way to get the BDP-83 in Europe/Germany?

The only thing I would like to have as an aditional feature would be the output resolution option 1080p/48hz.

For the Canadians on the forum who are looking to buy the BDP83 and are not aware, there is an authorized reseller in Mississauga, Ontario "OnlyBestRated" that has them in stock. The price fluctuates with the exchange rate but they are presently going for $554.44(Cdn) PLUS shipping OR if you live in or around the GTA, with pre-arrangement, you can avoid the shipping costs and pick it up directly from their warehouse.

I, myself, have purchased a number of items through Curt Palme. I only mentioned this purchase option because it may be of benefit to a few in the area. Unfortunately, it is easy to criticize if you reside where you don't have to concern yourself with exchange rates, increased shipping charges and the extra duty on purchasing an item from the U.S because it is actually manufactured overseas. You may think it is cheeky but it is reality.

This month's Best of the Year edition of Home Theater Magazine just gave Best Source Device AND Best Product of the Year to the Oppo BDP-83. Sorry, i couldn't find a link.
