Good News ? I have engineered a fix for the so called “streaking problem” in the 1292. The implementation requires the addition of a small P.C. board to each of the existing neck board assemblies and minor modifications to the neck board.

I have implemented the mod on six neck boards with 100% success. The mod eliminates the streaks, the dark bands and improves the overall picture contrast.

This poll is to get an idea of how many 1292 users are out there willing to commit to purchasing this upgrade and to determine its cost and viability.

I bet there are at least 10 people who'd be interested here, id post on AVS also and maybe even in VideoGon to test the waters, if you cant sell it at least share the info on how to at some point... but after you find out if it be worth while.

Congrats on your success too!!

If i had a 1292 id get it done.

I'm sure there would be a great deal of interest at a cost of $20./ neckboard/fix, but I'd also bet that interest would exponentially decline with a steady increase in price. How many would be willing to pay $200./neckboard ? I'd bet only a handful.

give me a break, there's no way something like this could be done for 20 bucks. He has to make a circuit-board and then modify the old card. At $100. each($300. per PJ) it would be a very cheap price.

Cost? I think this will be the determining factor.

I think he first wants to get some idea of how many parties are interested, since depending on whether he has 5 or 15 interested parties, the price will be impacted greatly. The thing that scares me about this is that Kal has mentioned on more than one occasion somebody doing a "survey" like this, and had many interested parties. After production was done, and it was time to place orders, hardly anybody moved on it.

Personally, given the number of 1292's out there, and all the other options now, I just can't see enough people interested to make this a viable venture. I could see if everybody wanted to chip in on the parts and go DIY - maybe. But, start putting in manufacturing and production, labor to do the mod, shipping two ways... I'm not seeing it happening.

But, hey - Congrats on the fix and best of luck!

SC

PS - You probably should have restricted your voting to people who either have 1292's or people who would buy a 1292 if they had the streaking fix. My opinion isn't relevant since I don't have a 1292 - so I didn't vote.

I think your right, it's a few years too late for this to be profitable but there's always the option of doing it for the hobby in general.

I think the best thing that could be done for the 1292 community is to publish the board and allow owners to DIY it.

It's just too hard otherwise, and there's no money in this stuff anymore.

If this mod was published, I'd seriously start hunting for a 1292.

Based on current poll data, cost estimate for upgrade kit is $215

CostPerKit = (InitialInvestment + Demand*(PartsCost + LaborCost)) / Demand

I've got a minty 1292 in the equipment closet that might be fun to mod. So count me in if this mod gets ~$100. Otherwise, it's nice to know the option might be available for the next owner.

Otherwise, the 1292 gets bashed too much for it's size, fan noise, and lack of brightness. I think the streaking problem is #4 on the list of perceived drawbacks. So I can't see investing more into this beast if the first 3 stereotypes are already hurting the potential for resale regardless of the cost. But if this was my primary projector, $215 would be a worthy mod.
