|
|
I had the opportunity to calibrate a new DLA-RS20 and install a Lumagen Radiance XE last weekend. I was so impressed with the combo that I wrote up a review. Here it is:

Wow, I'll have to take some time and read through that.
FYI- your link for the RS20 is dead.

Thanks for the heads up. The link is to JVC, but their hosting capability doesn't seem to be very good!
I think I will upload the manual to my server and link to it there.

Hi Craig,
Great writeup. It sounds like you finally got the JVC looking nice with the Radiance.
But, how many hours will pass before it will all have to be recaled again because of the bulb changing? That could get expensive for your services over the life of the bulb in order to keep it looking good I would think.

Well, that depends on the degree of accuracy the viewer desires. Personally, I recommend just getting digitals tuned up 100 hours after changing the bulb. So if the bulb in the RS20 lasts 1500 hours, I'd tune it up every 1500 hours. That being said, I would suspect that once the projector is calibrated it will always remain more accurate than it was out of the box even after a new bulb.

I have no idea. However I will say that the black level was quite dark... as dark as any digital I have seen. The RS20 was not as dark as a 9" CRT nor was it as bright as a 9" CRT on a 1.3 gain screen. For example, my G90 goes pitch black with gamma correction and I put out 13.5 flt on my ST130. This RS20 had some obvious (though subtle) glow on a black screen and it was putting out just over 11 flt on a 1.0 gain Draper M1300.
Honestly, I don't have a meter that can read light levels at black so I don't have any way to do an honest contrast ration calculation. The PR650 is not good for this. I don't worry about measured contrast ration from a calibration standpoint because there usually isn't anything I can do to make the blacks any darker on a modern digital projector. A few years ago adding a neutral density filter would improve black levels, but now with dark chips and iris' you pretty much are stuck with a fixed black point.

Hi Craig,
Thats assuming the bulbs are identical too, but like you say it will be miles ahead of the out-off-the-box cal.

So you still prefer the image your G90 gives over this combo?

Yes, easily. But I will say that the gap is narrower than ever before.

I would personally rather have a G70 if all we are talking about is strictly image quality. The RS20 will of course be sharper (though it did look pretty film like), but the G70 just seems more natural to my eye. However, the RS20 is a new projector that is easy to set up compared to a G70 so if I were a regular hobbyist I would quite possibly choose the RS20 over a G70.

Thanks Craigr,
My G70 is broken down, while trying to repair it, I am also considering to take the chance to upgrade it a G90 or buy a digital projector. My projector has been down for a month and I am thinking getting a digital projector is quick, also I can as well take a real taste of digital projector. Even after fixing my G70, I can still have both set up and taste them both.
While G90 is certainly one of the few best CRT projector available, I just think it will make my 15 years CRT projector life a little more complete with one of the best.
It is a difficult to choose.

Yeah, I can imagine. I feel pretty comfortable running a G90 because anything that goes wrong with it I know I can fix. If I couldn't do component level repair I would be much more nervous about running a G90.
The digitals are easy to do a basic setup with. Plug in an RS20 and you have a respectable image. The downer with digital projector and tweakers who like to mess with their set is that there is little you can do with a digital without a Spectroradiometer. You can't even really get the color set right.
