red/green do anything to reduce haloing?

ive got a set of color-filtered hd-145 that i cant use right now because of throw distance and ive got a set of old sony 187 tubes with colored glycol that i could put into my stock non-color filtered tubes on my marquee8000.

i did at one time briefly put the hd-145 color-filtered lenses on and did notice the deeper colors but didnt pay any attention to the haloing.

so maybe the haloing was reduced and thats why i didnt notice it?

are there any color-filtered lenses for my marquee8000 that have the same throw distance as my hd-8 lenses so i dont have to move the pj?

I get the same thing on my 8500 AC. Nothing we can do about haloing except bite the bullet and convert them to LC. That's why I don't obsess with setup to a certain extent. I go through it all a couple times and call it good enough.

Patterns are an indespensible tool for setup but they can't do anything for the halo around a wall torch in a tunnel scene, or a shot of a bright moon on an inky night sky, so why bother going crazy trying to achieve 'perfection'.

More accurate color I'm all for. I have a set of 145's and Joust Adapters I've YET to mount (after a year). I'm not lazy, (OK, maybe a little) I just dread the thought of taking the thing down and starting from square one again. Shocked

Greg just do it!!! And while its down dust out the whole projector and clean the mother and back lane board good. Your Marqee will thank you.

i agree about the dusting!!

i couldnt believe the amount of dust in the powersupplies!!

ive since added a household floor-vent type filter in front of the intakes.

i never really noticed the haloing until someone mentioned it and now it drives me a little crazy!! Sad

and someone nearby was selling a minty 9500 ultra for $3500 that i didnt have. Sad

soon enough though. Smile

Doesn't your EYE pretty much see halos around bright lights anyway? Granted, the limited dynamic range of the PJ means you'll get halos in, say, a closeup of a black keyboard with white characters. But I'm not sure that happens so much...

Or, maybe it's just my glasses that halo. They *are* air-coupled... Very Happy

I never noticed them either before until the forum made it a big deal and even then i had trouble seeing them. they don't bother me but i do see them1 or 2 times in an average movie.

the wieredest thing i noticed about my glasses when i wear them is they cause the convergence to change on the screen If your tilt your head to the left you get a red fring and the other way is blue Shocked
I've never noticed Haloing with them though. The Halo's on the CRT screen are 3 or 4 times larger than the object thay halo. sometimes they even spill off the screen borders.

I did the colored glycol on my 8000 before I sold it and saw NO difference in the amount or appearence of halo's. However the difference in color was significant and was more than enough to warrent my time to do the work. Change the glycol, it is a worthwhile and cheap improvement.

Colored glycol won't affect haloing at all. It's still an air-coupled projector, just with more accurate colors.

From what I understand the Halo is the reflection of the light off the outer glass, with a liquid coupled tube there is no second flat glass to reflect the light, the "c" element is that second glass that holds the cooling liquid between it and the face of the tube, the 'c element' is curved reducing/eliminating the halo reflection back to the lens. Not sure if this is exactly how it works but i think its close Very Happy .

the halo itself is a bit of a -distractionary?- nuisance.

what really bothers me is seeing how much light is being spilled into the surrounding image and seeing how much this is affecting the overall contrast in the halo are. Sad

and im going to speculate that the spill-over goes beyond the bright outer ring and is spoiling that contrast too.

im thinking the overall effect of lc is a punchier and more vibrant image with the same video chain.

have the red and green sony tubes on the bench for pulling the colored glycol.

i realized that the volume isnt going to be enough for my tubes but maybe 75% ?

is it worth the time and energy to get to 75% of correct ?

i know i can see the difference from non-filtered to filtered.

would most people be able to see the difference between 75% correct and 99% correct ?

can i do anything to he colored glycol---

i just remembered that i think i have 2sets of sd-187 with colored glycol. Smile

just have to find them but i think i know where they are. Smile

do yourself the favor and mount the HD-145 (or HD-144) lenses. They will significantly reduce halos.

The step from HD-8 or HD-6C ML lenses to HD-145 does more to reduce halos than the step from HD-145 to LC.

With HD-145 lenses you should pretty much only get halos with isolated bright objects on an otherwise black screen (e.g. a torch in a dark cave). And even then the halo is much less distracting then the halos you get with HD-8 or HD-6C lenses.

kscmit2 : i cant move the pj out into the room anymore or the screen any more forward.

although i think that when i get the screen mounted to a frame the extra 1" and the pj forward it might allow the hd-145 lenses to focus.

right now if i move the pj forward max the hd-145 lenses are right below their limit for being able to focus.

i even considered extending the focusing groove to let the wingnut slide a little more for more adjustment.

1031 : what was used to mask ?

im thinking any kind of tape would probably melt or make a mess.

masking the unused area does seem like a good idea. thanks.

cardboard painted with matteblack should be ok.
