ok so i have decided that this might be the best route for me. i am curious as to the part numbers that i need to give the guys at wilsonart, in order to get exactly what i want. as was said on here there is a local supplier (to me) so i will go there and pick the material up as long as they allow such a thing. i want 8x10 material size.

Let us know where you are and how much they quote you will you? I've tried to buy it here but's its gone stupid expensive.

Also when ordering ask for the thicker laminate.

Yeah, you want the D354, which is "Designer White", and you want it in the "60" matte finish, hence the D354-60 that Clarence posted. You want the "standard grade" which is the thickest grade... as AR mentioned. There's also a "vertical" grade which is much thinner.

I think the standard grade material comes from the factory in sheets of 3, 4, or 5 feet wide, and in lengths of 8', 10', 12' - or 9 different sizes. Several suppliers I called had only 4x8, 5x8 or 5x12 though.

I just googled and this place sells some of the smaller sizes - prices seem good, too:

I was going to get it from Lowe's or Home Depot, but both had to order because they didn't stock. They said it would be 10-14 days. So, I did some checking and found a local wholesaler who had a 5x8 in stock. It was about $10 higher (I think it was $105 vs the $95 or so Lowe's price), but I got instant gratification. Three cheers for instant gratification!!!

In Dallas, you can buy it at home depot for the cheaper price, then go to the local distributor to pick it up. The best of both worlds!

Hey guys. When you are looking for Wilsonart stuff, go to their website http://www.wilsonart.com/ click on the Homeowners link under Laminate and then click on "find a dealer". Try some of those local dealers and see what the prices are.

The Wilsonart I purchased was about 1/4 or 1/3 the price of Home Depot or Lowes. And, it was ready for me to pick up in 2 days.

Just a note from my experiences buying the stuff....................

Wow that's only about $2.62 sq ft. I got quoted, directly from Wilsonart, $3.08 sq ft

How much did you get it for?!?!? In Dallas, the home depot is only $80+tax for a 5'x10' piece of the thick stuff. That would mean you paid $20-$27 for it?!?!?!?!?!?

For a 4x8 sheet (D354 60 335) which is the thinner type (I didn't need the thick type), $24.98 + $1.25 tax = $26.21. I had to drive about 40 miles to pick it up.

The prevailing wisdom seems to be that you should use the thick stuff but I've not tested the thick vs. the thin so I'm curious as to how to determine when you don't need the thick stuff. Was it just the size, or the way you were mouting it that led to this decision?

Gas is $4/gallon so don't forget to add the $12 in gas to make the trip. Smile But, I think that is only a little bit cheaper than HD if any cheaper. Just curious, would HD not sell you the thin stuff and that's why it was cheaper?

I think if you have a nice, smooth solid substrate, the vertical grade material (the thinner stuff) would work just fine. For instance, with my MDF-based screen I built, I probably should have gone with the thinner/cheaper stuff.

If you're not literally laminating it to another substrate, but are instead hanging or attaching it to the wall somehow (tape, nails, screws), then I think you'd want the thicker material to avoid waves or ripples.

I had no idea the vertical grade material was THAT much cheaper. I figured it was like $75 vs $100, not $25 vs. $100! Oh, well - water under the bridge.

I glued it on Melamie (sp?).

Well, gas was only $3.25 6 months ago. Mr. Green

Home Depot only offered the thick stuff. And, they are a real pain to deal with here when "special" ordering things.

The folks I purchased my stuff from was very helpful, friendly and prompt. Can't ask for much more.

IIRC, the thick stuff was only like $10.00 more. The thin stuff was much easier to work with. I used the thick stuff the first time I used Wilsonart (I too embarresed to say what happened to with that fiasco.) and figured I'd try the thin stuff since I glued it to a thick backing (Melamie) like you did.

Wait, so you're saying that a 4x8 sheet of the vertical grade stuff was only $25, and a 4x8 sheet of the standard grade stuff was only $35? $35 would be between 1/3 and 1/2 of the lowest prices I've ever seen. I don't think anybody has ever reported paying anywhere near $1/sqft. It makes me wonder if the supplier screwed up and charged you below their cost or something.

YES.

Just for the heck of it, call the place where I purchased mine and ask them for prices on different sizes. The name of the company is Reico. Phone number: (703) 256-6400 or (800) 336-4526. The person I dealt with was Tammy Milne. Her direct number is (703) 245-8915.

Let me know what you find.

Now that I think about it, what has other people come up with as far as prices go? Has anyone tried the "dealer locator" on the Wilsonart site and called to some of those places close by your home?

That's how I found the company I purchased my stuff from.

I paid $90 for a 5x10 piece from Lowe's by special order. I'm not sure what grade it is though. It was thin enough to be rolled up to the diameter of a large trashcan or 55 gallon drum but rigid enough that I could lay it against the wall and it would support it's own weight.
