The TC1500 and the Box1020 seem to provide the same functionality. Is there any reason for me to pick one over the other?

You are correct. The TC1500 isn't advertised as providing gamma boost yet, but that'll likely be in the final version. The only difference is: The Box1020 is out and shipping, the TC1500 is still under development.

There may also be subtle differences in how they implement their features, so until someone gets their hands on both, how same/different they are in unknown. My gut feeling (knowing both developers) is that they'll be more similar than different. Both Kim and Juha really know what they're doing.
