Got an error on the Marquee, all the red LED's on the Diagnostics panel are lighting up in sequence in quick succession. The LED's light up from left to right and then back again. You could get ill watching them Shocked

The yellow standby light on the rear panel comes on when I plug the pj into the mains and switch the mains socket on (and the LVPS fans spool up), I press Power on the remote and then I hear a click and I can then hear the sizzle as power flows through the pj and the fans spin, then unfortunately the LED's start their merry dance!

Not sure whats up here, HVPS maybe?

Thanks guys,
Paul

The railroad lights are telling you that the logic circuit inside the CLM is experiencing a fault. I have seen this caused by a couple of things.
Incompatible U35 and U16 chips is one. If U35 is 4.2 or higher then U16 needs to be at least 3.1
One machine I received had the U35 chip pushed in c*ck eyed which benot over one the metal contacts. Straightening this out cured everything.
IT could be that you simply need to pull the chips, use a PLCC extraction tool, wipe the contacts with a de-oxit type cleaners, and carefully re-assemble. Pay close attnetion to orientation. There' a couple of indicators on the board showing the clock position.

You're fast today draganm! I think you were writing the answer before I'd asked the question!!
Many thanks for the pointers, I'm pull the board and have at it in the next couple of hours.

Edit - just checked the Control Board, U35 is 3.4 and U16 is 2.4. BUT!!!! Just pushed in a couple of the PLCC chips which weren't properly in place (my fault, I checked thesed previously and thought they wer ok). Good call - just about to try it back in the pj

glad to hear it. Control module problems can a real PITA and they're not all that common to find used.

Too late!

Nah, I've just reassembled and fired up the pj for the first time since around November last year. I've only been looking at the internal menus but I'll run a movie through it later today just to check all's well. I need to install it properly and do all the focusing, astig etc etc. but must first check that my mods are working. Yep, I've been modding it without checking whether the mods work or not. Dangerous I know but couldn't help myself. However, even a fool like me realises the potential for disaster and your CLM mods (and warnings) finally got me off my butt and put the pj together before something really bad happens (may already have happened so need to hook up the HTPC to check).

I've only changed the op-amps on the CLM so far (although I've also done all other mods done as listed in your enhancement thread). Almost had a heart attack when the pj wouldn't work yesterday but draganm put me right. After that, I definately won't be doing any more mods until I can fully test what I've been doing first. Like I said, may yet find a problem with the stuff already done - hope not, fingers crossed!

I cringe at the thought of someone doing mods to a non-functional projector. If you are going to make changes, you should always start with a fully functional projector. How else will you ever know if a problem exists with your work or somewhere else in the PJ. Multiple un-tested mods is the worse. One mod at a time, testing your work as you go please. Wink Who cares how long it takes that way. After all, it's just a hobby. Laughing

Good advice Chip and I've definately learned my lesson Embarassed I know I've been extremely silly, no more mods until I get the pj fully installed (which may be a couple of weeks at least).

Good news is that a quick test shows that video through SVideo works fine and all the menus etc work ok, have to leave the HTPC 'til later though.

PAUL!!!!! You've been a bad boy!!!!!! Alway do mods to a working Projector to TEST WHAT YOUVE DONE!!!!!
Trying to find a problem after changing a million things is not fun!! Unless you have an entire set of working boars to put in one by one please do not do this any more!

Listen to Chip !!! Mad

This is the one thing i was worried about doing this thread, Everyone please makes a few changes then test and this means not an entire board then test this means a few parts then test. it takes me hours to do a complete board where i know i could do it in 45 minutes all at once...TEST TEST TEST !!!!!!

ok I am done venting now, lets keep having fun but do it with caution please. Smile

Athanasios I am slowly assembling a {growing) collection of bad CLM's. Most common problem I'm seeing now is boards that lose Synch at higher resolutions like 720P and 1080P.
I don't want to replace 150 little pieces on the module, just the critical caps. So I will be devoting some time to getting and installing the recomended parts for the CLM mods stage 1. I don't feel like doing all the Inductors but if the stage 1 CLM mods fix the "no synch" problem or improve focus I will post back. BTW, Thanks for posting that stuff. Thumbs Up

I have one of those too, I need to look at it as well. Sometimes it just losses the picture then it comes on again. Not sure its a sync issue with mine as I do not get a no sync message. If you do the stage one try one with a low esr same value as i did and then try the MP value 100uf 50v. I am looking at maybe trying some 100uf 20v oscons there, its 5 volt rail so it should be enough. I just really like Oscon caps wish they made them in higher voltages, i think 40 is max I have seen.

I still need to add more of the 47uf tants to the IC's decoupling caps I only did about 52 or so, i want to see if I will get the power up problem that mark Haflic had on his, where MP had to remove about 5 to get it to start up. But that Might have been due to a low grade cap, you can say all you want that a cap is a cap but I think the higher quality caps work best and add less resistance than cheaper caps.

Actually if you have higher quality cap ,usually that measn lower ESR and that lower ESR is that what makes powering up harder. With those inductors in series on each supply line that startup load is litte easyer for powersupply.

Ot. Those pictures you posted on marquee modification&...thread Are those two "blue ones" really OS-Cons?? Those looks that they are from BC-Components (Philips)

Hey, what happened fellas?? I had the pints set up ready and waiting but you didn't show!? Had to drink them all myself.....hic!

Perhaps worth moving the four posts immediately above to the main Maintenance thread as they are more relevant to that and will be easier to find - Kal?
