Hi,
I think I may have mis-heard the commentator on the 'DVE' disc. I have now adjusted the first bar to become 'just' invisible.
I find the 'black level' deep enough, already without loosing shadow detail.

Sorry I missed this! Athanasios is right: Adjust until the 2% bar is *just* visible. You don't want the below video black bar (-4%) to be visible at all, otherwise your black level (0%) will be too bright and blacks will look grey. The 4% is just there for reference as the 2% is sometimes hard to see.
Just do what I wrote in the guide.  (Which I just updated a bit to make sure that people understand how to set brightness a bit better).

Kal - tried to catch you via email too.. but will post here while it is on my mind.
Reading through the guide, it seems to recommend using the Spyder2 without the filter.
However, you also recommend using the LCD setting for measurements.
My experience (http://www.lowtek.ca/roo/?p=44) indicates that you probably want to have CRT mode if you are not using the filter.
Am I confused? Seemed pretty black and white to me.

I believe CRT mode is intended only for when you place the Spyder directly on a direct-view CRT monitor.
I just did a test of my Spyder vs. a Minolta colorimeter, in LCD mode with the filter, and it matched the Minolta very well.

I am at the age where I can forget what I read walking from the PC to the HT, but I am having trouble printing the guide. Despite my best efforts at getting the printer to fit to the page in portrait mode I lose a portion of the RH side of the page.
Can it only be printed in landscape mode or am I missing something here?

You can cut and paste it any way you like into something like Word. I seem to have made the images too wide for the print feature to work nicely.
But I have to ask: Why is everyone printing this out? You need a PC to run the ColorHCFR software to do the readings, so simply have one window open with ColorHCFR and other open with the guide in a web browser. It has to be easier to read in the dark than printed paper, no?

Because some of us have internet access at one end of the house and the "home theater" at the other.
I have HCFR on a notebook (an iBook, actually, about which I will some day speak at length); I'm sure others have done the same.
BTW, GREAT job with the Guide. Many, many thanks.

Makes sense. I guess I figured in this day and age everyone had a $20 wireless router as I don't think any laptops built in the last 4-5 years come without wireless.

So if you don't have wireless, do a File - Save Page As - Web Page, Complete (or however your browser does it). Then carry the laptop into the HT and view your saved copy of the guide.
