So, I'm almost getting to the point where my HT room is cleared out and I can really start putting it together ( Surprised Surprised Surprised ). My plan is to have a two-level (ideally) riser in the back, with the couch on top, resting on a line of subwoofers which make up the back of the riser, in a way.

But, the question is this: I'd really like to have arced fronts to the risers, kind of like the attached pic (not of my HT obviously), but in front of the couch instead of under the screen.

Since I'm on an UBER budget (at the level where I'm going to use a $35 megascore craigslist oriental rug for the main rug in the room, so I only have to buy enough carpet to put AROUND THE EDGES) I need to do all the carpeting myself. And I'm not sure how you do that nifty wrap around the curved edge of the riser.

My riser would be curved about like the one in the picture, so here's the question - can I just glue or tack the carpet down to the top of the riser, wrap around and staple, and then cut the rumply bits off? Or will it be impossible to get it all flat, and I need some kind of ninja carpet skills to cut lots of Vs out of it and have them match imperceptibly?

I used a dark grey olefin carpet with no pad from a home improvement store; it was about 48 cents per square foot. Overall, it is about 1/2" thick with a strong backing. It forms around odd corners fairly well. I primarily used glue, but here and there I pushed the pile apart and shot a staple through. The pile hides the staple well.

Thanks, Mark

Cool. I'm probably going to go with black something-or-other from a local carpet place that's been good helping me out. Black will hide the cheapness, hopefully, as well as the ambient light quotient. The big-ass red oriental carpet in the middle of the floor (taking up almost all the floor space) won't help with keeping the color balance right, but a lot of guys have deep red cinemas, so it can't be too horrible. The walls are dark, dark brown suede, and the ceiling will be dark gray; front and back walls curtained black.

I used the stuff called Legato Carpet Tiles. It's made by Milliken. Got it from Home Depot. It was really easy to install, except for around a curved fireplace in the room.

The quality of the carpet is supposed to be really good. So far, we really like it. It's been down on a concrete floor and on a plywood riser for about 2 months.

And, if something happens to a part of the part like a big stain, etc..., you just pull up the tile(s) affected and replace them with new. We bought an extra box for spares tiles.

Yeah, well, if I had five hundred bucks to throw at carpeting that'd be great. But since my carpeting budget is probably about fifty bucks, and just to get enough remnants to cover the edges around my rug will break the bank, I don't think it's going to happen...

Sorry.

As for puting the carpet on the riser, I used a power stapler. And, when it came time to cut carpet, I used a carpet razor knife made just for that. Trust on the carpet knife; it is 10 times sharper than a regular razor tool.

I'm a little stressed... Sorry for being terse.

I was wondering if there's a special knife for carpeting; given how sharp a regular xacto is even when in good shape, I wasn't relishing the task...

Don't ruin your exacto on the carpet. Trust me, cutting carpet will ruin it. The carpet knife I got from HD came with a pack of 100 blades. I used a bunch!

And again, they are sharp; really sharp.

I'm seeing some drapes, but not much in the way of carpet.
