I'd like to see a forum for input devices. DVD, Blu ray, DVHS etc.
Id also like to see an "open forum" for the fun stuff.

I'd like to see more of z-photo's models...
and perhaps a:
DIY section (the models can help too if they'd like)
Photo gallery (HT related, I second derfla's motion)
Movie review section (movies that really show off a CRT's capabilities)

The "My Cinema" area would be nice to see what others have and I have not.....
the new layout is much better and will allow OT posts their own space and NOT get in the way of CRT "Help" questions
I think much better,
Well done guys.

I would say that since this is a CRT specific site, we can sub-divide the areas of interest. As such, I would think the following would be good:
CRT Projectors
---Set up and calibration (sub forum)
---Troubleshooting (sub forum)
Transcoders and Scalers
DVD Players
HD Sources (D-VHS, STB, etc)
HTPC
Possibly also:
Theater Design
Accessories (Remotes, cables, other stuff)

Interesting ideas guys... keep them coming. I'm not going to implement anything until we have a few days worth of back and forth discussions.
A note on pictures of HT's: I want to eventually create a true 'gallery' section so that people can post their own pics with comments. Much better then posting threads in a forum (IMHO). Pete: You can fill yours with Avatars.
I like were you're going with this Dave... essentially create an AVS but one that is 100% geared towards CRT. The problem we have now at AVS is that we put all our posts in the CRT forum as it's the best way to reach other CRT'ers, but often the post is considered off-topic and deleted. For example: Asking about what screen to use for a CRT should go in the 'screens' forum, but 99% of the info in the screens forum is digital related so none of us CRT'ers ever visit the screens forum. Post a screens question in the CRT forum and it gets nuked. Either way, you don't get results.

Two suggestions:
Hot or Not? (work friendly, please!)
Gay or Not Gay? (Listeners to The Ticket will understand; I never listen to Bob and Dan)

My fear with having too many subforums is that some threads may straddle multiple, and then it becomes difficult trying to remember which thread was in which subforum.
But very distinct ones, like gallery pics or movie reviews, are a good idea.

A HTPC sub-forum would be nice...
Also in regards to: Quote: | My fear with having too many subforums is that some threads may straddle multiple, and then it becomes difficult trying to remember which thread was in which subforum. |
I wish there was a way to flag a message so that it would appear on multiple sub-forums simutaneously (while still being a single thread with unified responses). Can phpBB do that?
Kind of akin to what google does with gmail (messages can have labels, and depending on what labels you want shown, you get different views). That way, you don't have forums in a real sense... topics will have default labels placed on them, and I can 'create' a sub-forum(view) to show my prefered topics. Maybe similar to what Microsoft has in store for us with WinFS (say goodbye to the folder/directory structure).
Of course, this forum is so specialized that this kind of complexity is totally unnecessary... but I'm a geek so it's fun to think extreme...

When I open the forum, I would like to see on that first page:
Link to subforum: Buy and sell
Link to subforum: CRT Projectors - Set up and calibration
Link to subforum: CRT Projectors - Troubleshooting
Link to subforum: CRT Projectors - Modifications
Link to subforum: Screens
Link to subforum: Screenshots
Link to subforum: Video sources
Link to subforum: Transcoders and Scalers
Link to subforum: HTPC
Link to subforum: Tasteful chick pix
Link to subforum: Forum Feedback
Link to subforum: Post Testing Area
(not sure about these two)
Open discussion (incl. off topic) - NOT LINK to open discussion. Threads visible on this first page. Announcements sticked on top.
(Try to forget who post this and think just about the content, OK?)

Thanks guys!
God_TM and Stevensen: Interesting ideas, but some of them I can't implement simply because of limitations on the phpBB software.
God_TM: I understand exactly what you're getting at... that's one of my worries to - If I create too many subforums it just dilutes the content. One of the things I liked about AVS was that EVERYTHING was in one forum. I only had to read one place. But then, that's useful for people that visit every day (like many of us). What about the person that comes in once in a blue moon that (for example) just wants to see what sort of screen to use with his CRT? A 'screens' forum would help out that kind of person. So we have to pick and choose: Do we build this for the every day visitor or for the casual visitor?
Stevenson (Stepan?): I can't make threads visible on the first page. Again, a limitation of the software.
It has to go like this:
Category 1
- Forum 1
- Forum 2
- Forum 3
- Etc
Category 2
- Forum 4
- Forum 5
- Etc

Thats me. For some reason I could not use Stepan. And isnt it possible to use more variable forum software? I just think the way I proposed would be the most convenient. Everything one click away.

Or stepan, Stepan II, stepan II, or in fact anything that starts with the letters stepan. I guess it must be a bug in the software! You should let the people at www.phpbb.com know about it!

Yes it is. And you're welcome to start to own board using it.

Another vote for HTPC forum. Theres a lot to be said about them and it would be nice to get the input from CRT folks.
Also I think it would be nice to have a forum devoted to upcoming source technologies and what we can do to adapt them with our CRT's. I know this is kind of a touchy area but maybe this could be discussed here without censorship since Curt is from Canada.
I still believe CRT is the best display device but that won't matter if they can't be made to operate with new technologies.

vBulletin allows sub forums, phpBB doesn't or didn't when I was the Admin on another site using phpBB. For this site I don't think it's something you will need unless you want to do the following for more sorted discussion/information:
-CRT Projectors- (Category)
Barco: (forum)- Barco 701/708 (sub)
- Barco 500/800/801 (sub)
- Barco 808/808s (sub)
I guess that depends on the number of CRT owners that will visit the site looking for exacting information about his/her model. You could further break down each sub forum further for a Mod's section for each model, something phpBB wasn't able to do.
The main thing I find lacking on AVS is an organized HTPC section. There are so many threads/topics mixed together that even searching brings up unwanted information.
Something like this would be better:
-HTPC-
Recommended Buyers Guide(with stickys for High End, Mid Range and Budget but quality performance)
General
Video
Audio/Sound
DVD Drives
Sound Deadening/Fanless
Software
That's just a few ideas; I'm still new to the CRT HT realm.

What could possibly go with CRT's and projection?
Well, sound equipment. It's like koolaide without sugar, ham without the burger, peanut no butter. Who here owns a CRT that doesn't have a surround system.

This is kinda crazy, but would a vintage gear forum fit in? I collect old stuff and I've got a 1938 Philco radio that needs some TLC to get going again.
