Wow, look at that heavy construction. That's a bunker-and-a-half! Nice mechanicals, too! Man, I wish I could have afforded hydronic heat when we built our house. So comfortable - and perfectly silent.
Good luck with the build!!! When do we see HT drawings?

There is a 80 litre tank for warm water - too little for our bath tub unfortunately. Other than than we are happy with the heating system.
The outer walls are 39 cm water proof concrete. The house is behind a dike next to the river rhine.
What's wrong with the ceiling? It's cast-in-place concrete and you see the traces of the boarding.
Acoustic is great, we save a lot of amp power . We mimic gun shots with a pneumatic hammer...
...or why not fire a gun in the first place.

Chris was asking about the cast-in-place ceiling because NOBODY has concrete floors/ceilings here in the US unless you live in a large urban multi-story dwelling. Everything outside the cities in the US is all built with lumber and engineered lumber products - much lighter construction. The only that's concrete in most US suburban dwellings (single OR multi-family) are footings, slabs, and basement or crawl-space walls.
Wow, your 39cm thick water-proof walls are basically DOUBLE the thickness of most cast-in-place basement walls here in the US.
I have good family friends in Bensheim and West Frankfurt. I would LOVE to visit Germany - I should have done it before we had kids - we'll have to wait years, now. Kölin = Cologne, yes?

Reminds me of the cold war era bomb shelter my Dad built in our back yard in the early 60's... except for the windows, and the ceiling was three feet thick.

Well there's one thing to be said for the ceiling...'taint no sound getting to the upper level. Down side, no infinite baffle in his future unless it's horizontally installed outside the room.
If there's a tank involved for bathing it isn't a tankless on-demand heater system. I have one sitting in the box waiting on my back to, uhm, come back after last weekends ice chopping marathon I pulled in my driveway.
Anyway, that space doesn't look too different from what I started with...other than no floor joists showing. Definately alot of LiquidNails/construction adhesive will be used on this project.
I don't get the 'fire a real gun' thing in the house but...eh, chalk it up to cultural differences.
Good luck with your project. Do you have a projector yet or one in mind?
Greg

Those pics date from 2004. Inbetween there was quite something happening. All pics from my other posts in the projector boar were taken in that room. Please stay tuned for more in the next days...
@JustGreg
I even have a projector on my ceiling!

When we moved into our new house I thought I needed a place of my own so I was granted this cellar by the rest of the familiy. No idea yet about home cinema. This should start two years later. Wife and two kids are welcome as long as they can stand my music taste and sound level. I used it mostly for having beers with my buddies while recovering from the hard working day. Also it serves as storage for various stuff.
One, maybe THE, concept of my refuge is low budget high value. The wall and ceiling design for example was driven by the price of the paint.
In a former life I was playing guitars. Now there was no more band and I got bored of that. But what to do with your time when the house is nearly finished and you start having a private life again? Yes, I got a cheap Korg digital piano. Thought it would be cool to teach myself playing until it turned out that only the very first steps are easy. But that still didn't make me an entertainer like Billy Joel or so. The sound was crap anyway and synthesizers can do very cools stuff, right.
That was the point when I started to respect electronc music - even after several hours playing with teh synth my sounds still didn't cope with Depeche Mode. Compared to making really nice elctronic music playing guitar like ACDC or Metallica is a peace of cake.
Okay, no more music making experiments, let's buy a motorbike. Still have that today but hardly get to riding it. But I did a lot of poshing in the first weeks. That kind of reminds me of my first CRT - by far more tuning and adjusting efforts than actually watching films.
Still did not think of home cinema yet. But I found a cheap drum set on ebay. Playing drums is cool, fun, loud, easy to get to an acceptble skill level, you can do it with bad weather - what a great idea.
In mid 2006 my refuge looked like these pictures. Only the motor screen and the prjector were not there yet.

Just updated the pictures, will upload more of the old room later.
Very helpful advice Kal. I had the same issue in various threads before I aked this time. If not mentioned somewhere onthe site already, it would be really wothwhile adding the 1024 pixel limitation to the file size information link on the upload attachment screen.

The idea of a big screen came to me when I found an article about do it yourself projector construction usin an overhead projector an a disassembeled TFT monitor. Didn't take pictures of my first machine but it looked quite similar to this one. If someone is interested I can give some links about construction.
UNfortunately I was not lucky in tuning the light output and air cooling. My experiments were ambitious the picture was not too bad for about ten minutes. But then I was harshly awoken from my dreams by the smell of melting plastic.

I then found out that baseband CRT projectors have about the same investment cost like my DIY beamer. I found a Sony 1252Q with about 10000 hrs, BNC-cables and the motor screen that I still use today on ebay.
That projector was really my break through to a new life filling hobby.

I actually like your theater a *lot*.. it looks like comfortable living space instead of a sterile "let's watch movies like we're in a public theater" room. Congrats, and you were very wise to get away from the overhead projector DIY machines.
