I have been a fan of your web site for a while. Now I have a need to ask for
your help on what I need to buy and if you have the solution.

I have a Mitsubishi Big Screen TV (WS-55411). It is about 5 years old and
works great. I have a PC setup for input to the TV so I can record/play movies.
TV does not have Hdmi but does have 480i YPbPr input.

My problem is that the TV has a VGA input (640x480 only). I also have an open
480i input. I want to use the 480i input but have not been able to find a
video card setup that will work. I had a high end (512MB) PNY PCI Express video
card, in addition to the one on the PC motherboard. The card also had a YPbPr
adapter that worked off the S-video output.

I returned that card since it would not go to 640x480 only 720 x ? and the
TV picture was too large for the screen. The video card did not have a
horiz/vert size adjustments.

The VGA input now works with an ATI video card I bought. It has a
640x480 resolution output. I would like to use the YPbPr (480i)
input with a video output from the PC.

All the above is for background.

I am not ready to replace the TV but given the great advances in HDTV
technology that maybe the best solution.

Other than replacing the TV...what in your opinion is the best solution for
me. I want to view movies stored on the PC hard drive on the TV. I would
like to use the 480i input- YpbPr- but need something to get
video output from PC to TV. I am open to buying another video card, could not
find any with YPbPr outputs at 640x480mresolution.

Is there a converter that takes the SVGA output from PC, say 1024x768 and
converts to YPbPr video so I do not have to deal with the PC resolutions and
the TV resolutions.

Are you aware of any items that will solve my problem?

Acording to what I just found on this TV it can do 1080i!! You can run a high def signal into it and as with most Mitsubishi set's I bet it will look great!

What ATi card do you have? Most will output over the component quite well at 1080i. You may have to adjust for overscan by customizing the desktop sizing.

I see by the back pannel you have the RGBHV input option! This will allow you to run VGA directly into the set. Now the input is labeled 480i/480P/1080i so you should be able to select 1080i in your ATi drivers ( there's an option to force 1080i in the newest drivers )
and use a VGA to RGBHV break out cable, either with BNC to RCA plug adaptors or get a cable like the one below that goes VGA to 5 x RCA.

I found those for sale here: http://www.digitalconnection.com/products/cables/eehd5r.asp

My ignoramous endeavors were never successful getting Powerstrip in Windows to display anything beyond 480i/P using the DTV input on RGBhv. I have a 65907.

Yeah, me too on my circa 2000 Mits 55"HDTV.

The sounds the set made when trying to use custom timings were down right scary. You have to remember these sets are NOT multi-sync like most computer monitors & projectors that will sync on about anything you throw at them.

I don't know if you could damage them by sending a crazy timing to them, but I didn't care to find out.

Did you guys ever try a regular set top box to output 1080i to these Mit's? Just curious.

Yes...They STB's work fine...My experence was 7 years ago when the set was new....It may be easier now.

Powerstrip has built in custom resolutions for HDTV's now that may work fine. The Mits set now is just a beater now. Waiting for HD to become the norm it now has noticeable 4:3 burn pattern even running gray bars. It has served me well and when it dies I probably replace it with some type of "Digital"...ewwww. Smile

You must remember when you feed it RGBHV to go to setup and change the input from Y Pb Pr to RGB. Did you read the Powerstrip set up guide by Karnis on the A site?

Of course. I had first used my Mits with the Samsung SIR-TS160 DirecTV HD STB. It worked for both Component and RGBhv on the DTV input.
